Border agents arrested a suspected gang member Tuesday at a checkpoint near the Salton Sea.

Misael Valdez-Araujo, 20, was arrested after officials found him on a Greyhound bus at about 3:30 p.m. at the Highway 86 checkpoint, according to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency.

He identified himself as a U.S. citizen and presented a California driver's license, but authorities didn't think he was the man on the license and took him in for questioning.

Fingerprints and photos identified the man as Valdez-Araujo, who admitted to being a gang member from Santa Ana, according to the border agency.

Officials added he had tattoos on his chest and left hand that supported his association with a gang.

According to the border agency, Valdez-Araujo has an "extensive criminal history of of reoccurring violence with firearms and gang participation."

He was taken into custody and will face charges of illegally re-entering the country after previously being deported.
