McALLEN — David Vargas is too young to work at a border checkpoint or vigilantly patrol the Rio Grande.

But, he is now an honorary U.S. Border Patrol agent.

David, a 10-year-old third-grader at Castañeda Elementary School, was recognized by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s Rio Grande Valley Sector during a special visit its representatives made to him at school Monday morning.

He was given a pin, two red and navy blue hats, a teddy bear, a commemorative coin and agency shirts.
