WESLACO - Rio Grande Valley residents will see an increase in military presence in the near future.

U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar, D-Laredo, today announced that the Department of Defense and Border Patrol will conduct a joint training operation in the region. Approximately 250 military personnel are expected to take part in the drills.

Cuellar's office said people can expect to see military troops, vehicles and aircraft throughout the border region. Cuellar's office and a Border Patrol spokesperson would say exactly when or where the training will happen.

The congressman's office said the drills are meant to provide real-world training for military personnel while improving the Border Patrol's ability to counter threats along the border.

Officials said the training will be closely coordinated with the Mexican government.
