U.S. Border Patrol agents say two suspected human smugglers rammed two vehicles during separate incidents on Wednesday.
Early Wednesday morning, U.S. Border Patrol agents performed a traffic stop on a Chevrolet Silverado that had pulled an abrupt U-turn on U.S. 281 near Encino. The pickup pulled over, and several people bailed and fled, a Border Patrol news release said.
After that, the driver reversed his truck and rammed the Border Patrol vehicle, then sped off, crashing through a gate. He was not apprehended, but agents did arrest five Guatemalan nationals who were illegally in the country.
Later that night, near the border between Brooks and Hidalgo Counties, Border Patrol agents were notified of two vehicles involved in human smuggling.
The agents pulled over one of the vehicles, a Chevrolet Suburban. Another Border Patrol unit parked in front of the SUV. As agents approached the vehicle on foot, the driver sped forward, intentionally striking the unit parked in front of him, the news release said.
Multiple people then jumped out of the Suburban and fled. Agents arrested the driver and one person in the country illegally.
No injuries were reported in either incident.
