SAN DIEGO - Security camera video released Tuesday shows a man launching rocks with a slingshot from the Mexican side at a Border Patrol agent on the U.S. side of the border, officials said.

The man launched the rocks on Sunday morning from an area east of the San Ysidro Port of Entry called Soccer Field, the Border Patrol said. An agency surveillance camera recorded the incident. Videotape showed the man launching numerous rocks over the steel fence.

Border Patrol officials said the man was aiming at an agent on the U.S. side, but the agent was warned about the attack and left the area before he was hit.

The Border Patrol said the number of assaults against agents in the San Diego border area has risen over the past 10 month. From Oct. 1, 2007 to August 31, 2008, the agency document 340 assaults against border agents. That compares with 254 assaults recorded during fiscal year 2007, they said.
