Border tour shows Tucson chamber member affects of illegal immigration
    Dec 15, 2006
Ambos Nogales visit opens eyes of businessmen to various problems

    By Manuel C. Coppola

"It was an eye-opener," said John Camper of the Tucson Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce, following a visit Monday with Nogales, Sonora counterparts and businessmen.

    Policy being formed

Camper and fellow members of the Southern Arizona Chamber of Commerce Alliance (SACCA) were here, he said, "because we are forming proposed immigration policy that we plan to support and we felt it was necessary to get the perspective from the Sonoran side of the border. It was an eye-opener to learn that just like we have problems, illegal immigration affects them as well."

Olivia Ainza-Kramer, president of the Nogales Santa Cruz County Chamber said, the organization along with SACCA coordinated the meeting "in an effort to improve the understanding of border and immigration issues affecting Ambos Nogales." They were joined by Richard Castner and Randel Johnson of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, who hosted a dinner at La Roca Restaurant in Nogales, Sonora. The dinner followed a tour of the commercial areas organized by that city's chamber, Camara Nacional de Comercio and its president Raul Carbajal.

Special guests included Nogales, Sonora Mayor Marco Antonio Martinez-Dabdoub and two of his city council members, Migdelina Rubio and Claudio Placencia; Nogales, Ariz., Mayor-elect Ignacio Barraza; Glenn Hamer of the Arizona Chamber of Commerce and Industry; Jeanne Cain of the California Chamber of Commerce; Randy Gordon of the Long Beach Chamber; Steve Hill of the Las Vegas Chamber; Robin Riggs of the Salt Lake Chamber; and Thomas Leon of the Tucson Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.

    Brain drain

In addition to Carbajal, Armando Ruiz, Jacobo Daboub, and Nikita Kyriakis attended from CANACO.

Martinez-Dabdoub welcomed the group at La Roca. He thanked the participants for deepening their knowledge of the situation on the border involving illegal immigration, including higher crime rates and the taxing of public services.

But as a Mexican, he said, a greater concern is the brain drain from his country into the United States. "You have the problem of people coming across illegally, and Mexico has the problem of good people leaving our country" due to lack of employment or professional opportunities.

He referred to a favorite analogy of his which compares Ambos Nogales to the theory of osmosis. Martinez Dabdoub said the border fence historically has been a "membrane" that could and was permeated by both sides with people sharing family, business, and commercial ties.

    Osmosis

A new border barrier being considered by the United States federal government would stop that "osmosis" and in turn "both sides will suffocate," he said.

On Tuesday, the group was taken on a tour by the Border Patrol. They visited the Nogales station to get a glimpse of how the agency operates and then toured the actual border, said Lu Maheda, a BP spokesman.

Give me a break! You can only cross the border LEGALLY at designated places, so a fence only stops ILLEGAL entry. That "osmosis" you are talking about is "illegal entry." We aren't stupid, but you are a moron!

You can bet your last dollar that anyone with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce following their name does not have the best interest of American citizens in mind. All they are concerned with is business interest. I'm sick and tired of these folks pretending to know what's best for America and American citizens! The only true concerns they have is how to make more profits for the corporations and businesses they represent and speak for.
