HOUSTON (FOX 26) -A controversial vote in Brazoria County is calling for the federal government to stop sending illegal immigrant children to be housed there. The resolution was unanimously passed by Brazoria County Commissioners. It declares housing illegal immigrant minors is not in the best interest of the people of Brazoria County because of criminal organizations and terrorist groups continuing to exploit the situation and attempting to infiltrate Texas. The resolution goes on to say without a secure border Texas cities and communities can't protect the health and safety of the citizens.

"It's putting a burden on our own economy," says resident Beverly Rude.

Protesters waving signs packed the Brazoria County Courthouse.

Those who are against and for housing illegal immigrant children came trying to make their voices heard. "They come to the U.S. from far away to flee danger. The American Pie is big enough. We should be able to share some of our resources, says Marion Moorish.

"We have military veterans that can't even get care. We have American citizens that are homeless, " argues U.S. Marine Veteran David Prozac.

"The history of our country shows that, largely, folks of color have not been welcome here. We are a nation of immigrants but there's always been racism and xenophobia. That's a lot of what happened here today. There was a lot of hatred in the room," says resident Dr. David Michael Smith.

Dozens of Brazoria County residents lined up to speak at commissioners court as county commissioners pondered and then passed a resolution officially announcing Brazoria County does not want to house the kids who have crossed the border into the United States unaccompanied.

"I believe we ought to be enforcing the laws and securing the border but in reality it (the resolution) accomplishes nothing other than giving the people of Brazoria County a chance to speak their minds," explains Brazoria County Judge Joe King.

A facility in Brazoria County already housing immigrant children is in Oyster Creek. Brenda Browning lives right next door. She says a number of residents are upset because the very campus now holding international kids used to house and help troubled local children but was shut down due to lack of funding. "I have a lot of compassion for the children but I also know we could use the money for some of our (American) kids that are hurting," says Browning.

Most of the residents speaking out to Brazoria County Commissioners are against housing unaccompanied minors here.

So what does this resolution mean? Well, legally it doesn't change anything. Just like the resolutions recently passed in League City and Galveston County this sends a message to the federal government.
