This would have sunk a nomination previously, but with the lenient attitude toward breaking the law and so many crooks now holding offices in Washington, how will this go? We need to contact our Senators and complain that another person who cannot follow the law should not hold a job in our federal government. How can we believe or trust anyone? Why should we? What other laws will he break?

I made my calls to my Senators to say that if true, anyone who cannot follow the law on immigration should not be holding office. Ignorance on this matter cannot be used as an excuse since illegal immigration has been so publicized.

It has supposedly come from Senator Grassley. Call his office to say no more lawbreakers and people who ignore the job losses of Americans while hiring illegal aliens and avoiding the paying of taxes. In other words, Timothy Geithner would take our tax dollars to pay out to other wall street types and elitists who do not pay taxes on their labor or who knows what e

Senators Raise Questions About Geithner's Nomination at Treasury
    By JONATHAN WEISMAN

Sen. Charles E. Grassley, ranking Republican on the Senate Finance Committee, is raising questions about a housekeeper who worked briefly for Treasury Secretary-nominee Timothy Geithner without proper immigration papers, and multiple years when Mr. Geithner didn't pay Social Security and Medicare taxes for himself.

Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus (D., Mont.) has summoned committee members to his office this afternoon to air the matter ahead of any public confirmation hearing.

According to people familiar with the matter, Mr. Geithner employed a housekeeper whose immigration papers expired during her tenure with Mr. Geithner, currently president of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. The woman went on to get a green card to work legally in the country and federal immigration authorities didn't press charges against her, these people said.

The second issue involved taxes due while Mr. Geithner worked for the International Monetary Fund between 2001 and 2004. As an employee, Mr. Geithner was technically considered self-employed and was required to pay Social Security and Medicare taxes for himself as both an employer and an employee.

He apparently failed to do so, resulting in Internal Revenue Service audits his last two years at the IMF. As soon as the IRS brought the issue to his attention, he paid the taxes with interest, these people said.

It's unclear how much of an impediment these issues will be to Mr. Geithner's nomination. On its merits, his ascension has been widely praised. Mr. Geithner spent most of his career managing government responses to financial crises, from the 1990s bailouts of Mexico, Indonesia and Korea, to the market meltdown that has brought Wall Street to its knees.

At the same time, similar issues have derailed nominations in the past. President Clinton's first and second choices for attorney general both withdrew amid allegations that they failed to pay taxes for household help. President George W. Bush's first choice for Labor secretary withdrew after it emerged that she had employed an illegal alien.

Obama aides said they didn't believe these issues would present a problem, given the minor nature of the infractions and the gravity of the role he has been nominated to take.

On the tax front, Mr. Geithner's oversight is not uncommon. The IRS has mandated loose rules for U.S.-born IMF employees unaware of their obligations to pay payroll taxes.

Sen. Baucus nonetheless decided to hold a closed-door meeting to allow the two matters to be aired before Mr. Geithner's public confirmation hearing.

"It's important that I talk to senators, which I'm going to be doing," Sen. Baucus said as he went into the meeting.

Democratic senators plan to defend Mr. Geithner, saying that the nature of the complaints pale in comparison to the gravity of the crises he has been asked to face, a severe economic recession, turmoil in the financial markets and the collapse of the U.S. auto industry.(quote)

    Geithner Nomination Hits a Snag
Susan Davis reports on the transition.

The largely seamless confirmation hearings for President-elect Barack Obama’s cabinet nominees hit a snag today after Senate Republicans said they intend to raise questions about a former housekeeper for Treasury secretary nominee Tim Geithner, as well as questions about multiple years in which Geithner did not pay Social Security or Medicare taxes while employed at the International Monetary Fund.

(For more, read this Wall Street Journal story.)

Cabinet nominees with immigration woes, however, aren’t new to the confirmation process. In 2004, Bernie Kerik, the former New York City police commissioner who was championed by Rudy Giuliani, withdrew as Bush’s Homeland Security secretary, after it was revealed that he failed to pay taxes on an illegal immigrant who worked in his house.

Linda Chavez, Bush’s first Labor secretary nominee, withdrew in 2001 when it came to light that she had sheltered and given money to an illegal immigrant who did chores around her house.

Zoe Baird, Bill Clinton’s first choice for attorney general withdrew her nomination in 1993 after acknowledging she employed two illegal immigrants and didn’t pay the required taxes.

    Let Geithner Go!

Incompetence is quickly surpassing the watchword "change" as the hallmark of Barack Obama's transition team. The latest mistake is withholding a tax blunder made by his nominee for Treasury Secretary, Tim Geithner.

The guy Obama wants to lead the government's efforts in an economic recovery can't even fill out his taxes at best or at worst, attempted to defraud the same checkbook he wants to become the signer on.

Tim Geithner failed to pay taxes from 2001-2003 while he was an employee of the International Monetary Fund. He just happened to notice this mistake and repay it in November 2008. Meaning, upon it becoming clear he was a potential nominee, someone found the "mistake" or he realized he'd have to pay the taxes. He also employed an illegal immigrant as a housekeeper for a minimum of three months.

Seriously, is now the time to nominate someone for Treasury Secretary that can't fill out his own taxes right - or as mentioned previously, and just as likely - attempted to defraud U.S. taxpayers?

So much for rebuilding the confidence in government. Adding insult to injury, Obama's response as noted elsewhere essentially says confirm him because we're in a crisis and I don't have time to start the process over. Really? This is the U.S Government you're filling Mr. President-elect, not a pick-up game of street ball.

When your own fan base, also known as CNN calls Geithner-gate a "mistake," "blunder," "money troubles" and "trouble ahead." it's a good sign that the incompetence merits a do-over.
Additionally, look at the timeline. Obama's transition team covered this possible fraud, or mistake, for 8 weeks. They fail to disclose, then try to run the clock. Change you can believe in huh?

    Let Geithner go. Start over.
