Brewer: 1070 may need 'tweaking'

With Judge Susan Bolton's injunction Wednesday against several key sections of Senate Bill 1070, some legal experts are predicting the law's most controversial provisions will never go into effect.

Appearing on "On the Record with Greta Van Susteren" Thursday night, Gov. Jan Brewer said she had been in contact with legislative leaders Thursday to discuss making changes to the bill:

"Well, you know, Judge Bolton was pretty clear during the court hearing of things that she was concerned about," Brewer said, according to a transcript provided by the network. "So it didn't come as a complete surprise to our attorneys or to myself of the issues that she was concerned about."

"And there is a possibility that we might have to do a little tweaking. And I have been in contact today with the president of the Senate, President (Bob) Burns, and the speaker of the House, Speaker Kirk Adams, to get together and determine just exactly what it is maybe we might be able to do to tweak the bill to give them a little bit more satisfaction so that it would weigh more favorably on behalf of the state of Arizona."

Such a bill would mark the second time SB 1070 has been revised. Brewer previously signed into law House Bill 2162, which among other things specifically banned racial profiling in the determination of immigration status.

Brewer didn't elaborate last night on what kinds of "tweaks" might gain the Legislature's support -- or pass Constitutional muster. But it's worth keeping an eye on as the legal case wears on and lawmakers return to regular session in January.

Jan, if you can't get it right the first time, well please get it right before it goes to the Supreme Court.
