Broward County Deputy Killed and Other Shot 3 Times

On Saturday a Broward County deputy was shot and killed in a routine traffic stop and his backup officer was shot 3 times. The deputy that was killed was working an off duty assignment and came across a stolen vehicle and pulled it over. The driver gave the deputy his ID when asked and while the deputy was shot while looking at it. He did not have a chance to pull his gun out. This has been in the local papers and news as well as national news channels. Today I have learned that the 2 passengers in the car were illegals from the Bahamas. They will most likely serve time and them be extradited to the Bahamas. I hope that part makes the national news as well. Maybe then something will be done.
Last week a court case ended where a Hispanic rapist was tried for the rapes he committed as well as his escape from prison. He is legal but the woman who met him after he escaped prison and gave him money and brought him food is illegal. She was tried and they are deciding her fate. I hope she goes to prison before she gets deported.
Now there is a standoff in Homestead, city with a major invasion due to all the farms and construction in the area. The standoff started on Saturday and still is going on. There are two men involved and they both are Hispanic. One gave up but the other emptied out an AK 47 (all 30 rounds) at officers. Our SWAT team threw various chemical agents to get him out but he is still boarded up. Customs has 2 Blackhawks up in the area. I am not sure if the guy in the house is illegal but the one who gave up is legal. I just hope no one gets hurt.
When is this going to stop!

This is what I have been able to find so far on the stories you mentioned. Have not found anything yet as to the legal status from either incident. However, regardless, my thoughts and prayers go out to the officers and their families!

Suspect arrested in BSO deputy's killing; two others in custody
Officer from Royal Palm wounded in Broward shooting

A massive 17-hour hunt led to the arrest Sunday afternoon of a man suspected of shooting dead one Broward Sheriff's deputy and wounding a second in what Sheriff Ken Jenne called "a heartless, cold-blooded assassination."

Eloyn Devon Ingraham, 28, of Sunrise, was arrested about 4 p.m. at a Dania Beach motel, accused of killing Deputy Brian Tephford, 34, and wounding Deputy Corey Carbocci during a Saturday night traffic stop outside a Tamarac condominium complex.

Carbocci, a three-year veteran, was wearing a protective vest when he was shot four times. He was in stable condition at Broward General Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale on Monday, hospital officials said. The 37-year-old deputy was expected to make a full recovery.

Ingraham's name has come up before in another high-profile case: The unsolved 2002 murder of 17-year-old Marissa Karp, who was shot in the head and dumped in an Everglades canal, according to court records. The Sheriff's Office executed a search warrant in April 2005 to get DNA samples from Ingraham in the case. Samples were taken, but he was never charged in Karp's slaying.

In addition to Ingraham, Bernard Forbes, 22, and Andre Delancy, 19, were were taken into custody Sunday at the Rodeway Inn & Suites, 2440 W. State Road 84. They were later charged with accessory after the fact, jail officials said. Both had court appearances Monday and were being held in lieu of $7,500 bond each. Both also have immigration holds on them.

Jenne said the two men are being looked at as having helped Ingraham elude authorities. Ingraham was the sole gunman, but it is possible he fired more than one weapon, Jenne said.

"This was without provocation, without reason," Jenne said, his voice quivering. "We have Brian's killer in custody."

Ingraham's arrest capped a chaotic night and day of stark, haunting moments:
    • Two deputies down after a gunman blindsided them during a traffic stop outside Versailles Gardens condominium.
    • Sunrise residents startled awake by the sounds of barking police dogs, a helicopter's whir and shouting deputies as the search began for the man who killed their comrade.
A solemn procession of deputies escorting Tephford's body outside a hospital to the medical examiner's waiting vehicle.
    • Jenne breaking the news to Tephford's ex-wife. Tephford leaves behind twin toddlers and a 4-year-old girl.

Tephford, a six-year veteran, had been working an off-duty detail at Versailles Gardens when he put in a call at 11 p.m. for backup during a traffic stop, authorities said. Tephford pulled over the car in the 8000 block of North Colony Circle after finding it had the wrong tag, Jenne said.

Ingraham was a passenger and a woman was driving, authorities said. The woman is not in custody, and the Sheriff's Office did not release any details about her.

The exact sequence of what happened during the stop remains unclear.

Tephford tried to determine who owned the car, using a cell phone to talk to a family member of the driver. The driver maintained that the car belonged to her family and that one of her relatives had put the wrong tag on it, Jenne said.

Jenne said the car was not stolen.

As Tephford investigated, Carbocci arrived at the scene.

Ingraham opened fire without warning and so quickly that the deputies were unable to draw their guns, according to the Sheriff's Office.

Tephford, who was not wearing a protective vest, was shot twice. Carbocci, who was wearing a vest, was hit four times. Both were taken to Broward General in Fort Lauderdale. Tephford was pronounced dead at 12:01 a.m.

Jenne said his office recommends deputies wear their vests.

"Every new deputy will tell you that when I swear them in and give them a star, I always tap them on the back to see if they were wearing the vest," Jenne said. "It was not mandatory, but they have to sign a waiver."

The shooting and police response rattled awake Versailles Gardens residents.

"I thought I was dreaming. Bang, bang, bang, bang! And then I heard the helicopters up above," said Daniel Rodriguez.

As officers swarmed over the condo complex, a Geo Metro connected to the shooting was found abandoned near the Shoppes at Sawgrass strip mall in Sunrise. Street blocks were closed off as officers, police dogs and road patrols swept the area. Residents in surrounding neighborhoods weren't allowed to drive back to their homes.

"I don't think there's any agency in Broward County that isn't involved in this manhunt," Jenne said during a 4 a.m. briefing at Broward General.

At Hiatus Road and Oakland Park Boulevard, some Sunrise residents who were prevented from going home left their cars and fell asleep on the sidewalk, said Mofeed Alshoabi, 35.

"We've seen that many police only in the movies," he said. As the search intensified, a somber scene was playing out at Broward General. About 3 a.m., a dozen grim-faced deputies filed out of the hospital, escorting Tephford's body to a Broward medical examiner's vehicle. After the gurney was unloaded, some of the deputies hugged each other. Others just hung their heads in silence. A couple saluted. Then they filed back inside.

The Sheriff's Office declined to discuss how they tracked Ingraham to Dania Beach. After Ingraham was arrested at 4 p.m., the two other men were taken into custody about 5:30 p.m.

Ingraham has been arrested through the years on battery and drug charges, but never for a major violent crime, according to court records.

A May 2005 search warrant indicates he was examined as a suspect in the Karp murder. A Broward County Jail inmate told detectives Ingraham dumped the body in a canal off Alligator Alley. In addition, a woman told deputies she overheard conversations between Ingraham's friends that linked him to the crime.

DNA had been found under Karp's fingernails, according to the search warrant filed in Broward Circuit Court.

Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Veda Coleman-Wright said Sunday night she had no information related to Ingraham and the Karp case.

    Shots Exchanged In Homestead Standoff
    POSTED: 12:48 pm EST November 13, 2006
    UPDATED: 3:34 pm EST November 13, 2006
HOMESTEAD, Fla. -- A man authorities said they believed to be armed barricaded himself in a home in a standoff with police Monday.
The Miami-Dade Police Department said the standoff began just before 11 a.m. at a house near Eighth Street and Northwest Fourth Avenue. Members of its special response team were dispatched, along with officers from other law enforcement agencies.
Witnesses said shots were fired, but no injuries were reported.
Florida City police said the standoff began when a young lady called requesting police assistance.
"At that time, when the officers were en route to the location, apparently these two subjects took flight," Florida City police Sgt. Barbara Barrett said. "The officers in turn pursued them and that's when the shooting began."
Helicopters hovered over the scene and smoke -- believed to be created by officers to block the man's view from the home -- briefly clouded the area. Officers wearing helmets and holding weapons were seen ducking behind police vehicles.
Nearby Homestead Middle School was placed on lockdown as a precaution.
Eusebio Estradad, 19, is suspected of being the driver of a vehicle from which shots were fired at two Florida City police officers Saturday. Barrett said the passenger, 21-year-old Samuel Mendoza, was the shooter.
"He leaned out of the vehicle window and shot at the police officers with the AK-47," Barrett said.
    He was taken into custody.
Florida City police said Mendoza is the brother of Salvador Mendoza, who was convicted in 2004 in the shooting of a Homestead police officer. The shooting left the officer blinded.

Homestead Standoff Ends With Suspect Death

    Gary Nelson
    Reporting
(CBS4) HOMESTEAD After eight hours of negotiating with a suspect to come out of a Homestead home, Miami-Dade SWAT members have confirmed a stand-off has ended with the death of a possible suspect.

At about 7:30pm Monday night, police confirmed the standoff was over, also confirming that someone had died. However, they have not released if the person shot themself or if they were shot at by officers. Earlier in the afternoon, Chopper 4 captured video of SWAT approaching the backdoor of the home where one suspect, was taken into custody from the house. He held his hands through a security bar door at the back of the home to allow officials to handcuff him. The SRT team moved in, opened the door using a crowbar, and took the suspect into custody before searching the house for others.

A man, who police have identified as 19-year Eusebio Estrada, is suspected of firing an AK-47 assault rifle at two Florida City police officers Saturday while they were investigating a call for help at a residence. Police say Estrada and a second suspect, 21-year old Samuel Mendoza, jumped into a black Chevrolet Tahoe and fled. The Tahoe was later found, abandoned, with shell casings inside.

Police have not confirmed the identities of any of the two suspects in Monday’s standoff, nor are they saying how one of them died. However, Monday morning Florida City police got a tip that Mendoza and Estrada were in Homestead. Mendoza was taken into custody but Estrada barricaded himself inside a home at SW 312th Street and 184th Avenue. Police say he fired at least 20 rounds at Homestead Police who were trying to bring him into custody.

At least four officers were pinned behind a vehicle in front of the home until the Miami-Dade SRT team used some type of smoke diversion and moved in with their armored vehicle in order to get those officers, who were crouched behind a car in the street directly in front of the home, out of harm’s way.

A massive group of police officers were on the scene from various jurisdictions, including Homestead, Florida City, Miami-Dade and two Blackhawk helicopters from the Department of Homeland Security were launched from nearby Homestead Air Reserve Base to assist officers on the ground.

Florida City police said Samuel Mendoza is the brother of Salvador Mendoza, who was convicted in 2004 in the shooting of Homestead Police officer Edgard Rivera. Rivera was blinded in the shooting. Salvador Mendoza was sentenced to life in prison.

The backyard of the home looks like a junkyard, it’s filled with debris and an abandoned, unusable van. In addition, several windows of the home are boarded up with plywood.

Ohflyingone: Thanks for the posts. I actually heard from my friend who is a Broward County deputy about the 2 passengers being illegal. Someone had channel 10 news on this evening and during the 6 o'clock news report on the shooting, they mentioned that the 2 passengers were illegal. I was glad to see it. Then I thought that the only reason they said it was because the men were from the Bahamas. I wonder if the 2 men were illegal Hispanics if the news would have mentioned that.

The standoff in Homestead ended and the man who barricaded himself in the housecommitted suicide.
He was 19 and belonged to a gang called TOYS. It consists of Mexicans and Central Americans. I am not sure what percentage of gang members are illegals.
As for the media, due to the large Hispanic population in South Florida, often they won't say if the Hispanic is an illegal.

I caught some of this story on one of the news channels. I noticed that a lady one of the reporters interviewed spoke no English (her comments had to be translated). This lady was living in one of the neighboring houses. This, in conjunction with the suspects names, leads be to believe the area is probably full of illegal immigrants.

This may be the perfect opportunity for a Homestead, Fla. anti-illegal immigrant activist to start working on the mayor and city council members!

All I can tell you about Homestead is that they have a small police department and their police chief is African American. They had an officer shot in the eye by a brother of one of the two me who were involved in the incident with police. There are a lot of illegals just as in Florida City due to the farms and construction as I mentioned earlier. They also have the final NASCAR race which will be on this weekend.
