LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Amrutlal and Dakshaben Patel are scheduled to appear in federal court at 4:45 to answer to charges of housing, employing, and transporting illegal aliens.
According to a criminal complaint, the Patels are accused of forcing several undocumented Indian citizens to work in their Subway restaurants.
The investigation began in August. According to the complaint, a man went to Lexington Police, telling them there was criminal activity going on at some Subway restaurants. He told police he managed four Subway restaurants for Amrutlal and Dakshaben Patel and that they were forcing four undocumented Indian citizens to work in those restaurants as well as housing them at their home on Ellerslie Park Blvd. The man said one of those workers told him they were taken from the home to the restaurants between 9 and 11 in the morning, worked, then taken back to the home between 9 and 11 in the evening. He said when they got home, they would be locked in a secret room in the basement until morning. Those workers told investigators they were paid in cash at a rate as low as $4.00 to $5.00 an hour.
The Department of Homeland Security and Immigrations and Customs Enforcement got involved and two days ago, they raided the home, arresting Amrutlal and Dakshaben Patel. They're now charged with housing, employing, and transporting illegal aliens.
