SAN DIEGO, CA
At least 15 illegal immigrants have been detained after their small boat washed ashore in San Diego.
Immigration authorities say the boat, called a panga (PAHN'-guh), was spotted at around 1:30 a.m. Monday at Ocean Beach.
Panga boats are a common way for smugglers to bring drugs and people from Mexico into Southern California.

OCEAN BEACH — Twelve undocumented immigrants were arrested early Monday after their panga boat landed in Ocean Beach, with many people escaping into the surrounding neighborhood before being nabbed, authorities said.
Border Patrol agents spotted the boat as it was nearing Dog Beach about 1:30 a.m., and numerous agents and San Diego police officers responded, said Border Patrol Supervisory Agent Steven Pitts.
Some passengers tried to escape back into the water, while others ran into the neighborhood. A San Diego police helicopter helped locate the immigrants, who are all Mexican citizens. They were taken into custody by Border Patrol. Two of the passengers have been identified as suspected smugglers, Pitts said.
Authorities were continuing to search the area for a few others who may still be hiding, Pitts said.
