CBP Catches Fugitive from Attempted Murder in Oregon

Suspect Allegedly Fled May 2010 Convenience Store Shooting

San Diego, CA — U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers caught a fugitive, Wednesday at the San Ysidro Port of Entry, wanted for homicide/attempted murder in Oregon and by the Federal Bureau of Investigation for flight/escape.

At about 1:45 p.m. on July 13, Guadalupe Avina, a 26-year-old male U.S. citizen, and resident of Umatilla, Oregon, arrived on foot at the San Ysidro border crossing. He presented no documents to the CBP officer, but instead orally declared himself to be a U.S. citizen, and provided his name.

The CBP officer ran a standard query of law enforcement databases and received information about a possible warrant for his arrest. CBP officers, using the man’s fingerprints, confirmed his identity, and that the man had two outstanding warrants for his arrest: one, a warrant for homicide/attempted murder, issued at the request of the Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office, with bail set at $275,000; the other, a no-bail, felony warrant for flight/escape, issued at the request of the FBI.

CBP officers took Avina into custody, and he was booked into the San Diego County Jail pending extradition.

CBP officers at the ports of entry along the California/Mexico border caught 1,774 fugitives during fiscal year 2010, from October 1, 2009 through September 30, 2010.

In addition to catching Avina on Wednesday, CBP officers in San Diego and Imperial counties also caught:

A 28-year-old male Mexican citizen who attempted to illegally enter the U.S. at the downtown Calexico border crossing by acting as an imposter to legal documents that did not belong to him. CBP officers discovered an active warrant for his arrest for a dangerous drugs offense, issued at the request of the Imperial County Sheriff’s Office.

An 18-year-old male U.S. citizen at the downtown Calexico border crossing with an active warrant for larceny.

A 23-year-old male U.S. citizen at the San Ysidro border crossing with an active no-bail, felony warrant for vehicle theft, issued at the request of the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office (located near Colorado Springs, Colorado.)-year-old male U.S. citizen at the San Ysidro border crossing with a no-bail, felony warrant for charges related to amphetamine, issued at the request of the U.S. Marshall’s Service

A 55-year-old female U.S. citizen at the San Ysidro border crossing with a no-bail, warrant for counterfeiting, issued at the request of the Los Angeles Police Department.

A 31-year-old male U.S. citizen at the San Ysidro border crossing with a no-bail, warrant for a parole violation, issued at the request of the California Department of Corrections.

In each incident, CBP officers took the fugitive into custody, and they were booked into a detention facility.
