Group opposing illegal immigration rallies outside Fontana church

FONTANA >> They gathered in front of St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church on Sunday, at times singing patriotic songs while holding signs calling for the church and the federal government to focus their attention on the needs of Americans rather than on Central Americans who have recently begun arriving at the nation’s southern border.

About 20 protesters conducted a rally on the sidewalk in front of the church.

“This is a support America rally,” said Tressy Capps of Fontana. “We have veterans, we have the unemployed, we have homeless and foster kids.”

Each of those groups of people could benefit from the assistance of the church, she said.

Instead, Capps said, the church is aiding the newly arrived Central Americans who came here without following proper immigration procedures.

Late last week, the church welcomed a group of 46 Central Americans made up mostly of mothers and their children.

The Department of Homeland Security transported them to the church where parish volunteers and members of Catholic Charities of San Bernardino and Riverside assisted the families by providing food, a change of clothing, a place to shower and help with contacting family members in the Midwest and East Coast, where they were headed.

All of the services the church provided to the families were paid for by the Diocese of San Bernardino and with donations, said John Andrews, spokesman for the diocese, which covers San Bernardino and Riverside counties.

The families had documentation from their native countries, paperwork from U.S. authorities allowing them to remain in the country until they have an immigration hearing, and contact information for relatives at their destinations, he said.

When they arrived, the families were taken to a former convent on the church property. The majority left the convent to continue their trips within hours of arriving Thursday morning and all had left by the end of Friday, Andrews said.

Capps, like others at the rally, said she is concerned that President Barack Obama wishes to use $3.7 billion to cover costs associated with the arrival of the Central Americans — money she says would be better spent on the needs of Americans.

James Baca of Riverside, who grew up in Fontana and continues to attend services at St. Joseph periodically, is troubled by the actions of the church.

“The church has every right to support their position because it feels it is a humanitarian issue,” Baca said. “But for many, including myself, it’s a political issue that is hurting American families here in America.”

As Baca sees it, the families will place a burden on communities as they begin to use public services.

Assisting the Central American families, said Andrews, is part of following what the Catholic faith calls on people to do.

“This is a Christian witness,” he said. “This is not a political position.”

A month or two ago news broke that Obama’s HHS was calling for private contractors to help transport illegal aliens throughout the interior United States. What made this already big news even bigger is the fact that the original call for proposals came out in January, long before the bulk of the illegal alien surge began.
The breaking news you’re about to read is ten times bigger, because the following proves the Obama administration was bankrolling America’s churches back in 2010. And the tens of millions were flowing in to prepare for the invasion currently underway.
The following is a small taste of what’s out there in grant records. This is just the tip of the iceberg, folks.
Between Dec 2010 and Nov 2013, the Catholic Charities Diocese of Galveston received $15,549,078 in federal grants from Health & Human Services for “Unaccompanied Alien Children Project” with a program description of “Refugee and Entry Assistance.”
