Walk Out, Speak Up, Never Give In

Congratulations to all of those who have walked out in support of the Mexican Americans who are seeking the freedom to travel across the border. Bienvenidos. Never allow anyone to tell you that you are an "illegal" or an "alien". We are all part of the human family. You are our brothers and sisters. We welcome you.

Listening to corporate media and talk shows has exposed the dark underside of the USA culture. Hate filled, xenophobic speech is filling the airways. FOX news seems to be in a state of panic. Some in the US want the Mexicans to be treated as second class citizens. Might as well paint a black dot on the forehead of every immigrant.

Our paranoid, racist policy toward Mexicans is apparent to the whole world. The Mexicans should be given at least the same rights as those coming from Cuba. Our borders should be wide open. Welcome stations should be built there to assist the travelers.

One argument being used against immigration is that the inclusion of the Mexican workers will lower wages in the US. That is like blaming the residents of the Ninth Ward for the failure of the levee system. The purchasing power of wages in the United States has been steadily falling for decades. It has nothing to do with the Mexicans. It has everything to do with the globalization of corporations. Anger should be directed at corporate CEO's and shareholders, not the workers. The fight for a fair wage system must include efforts to globalize the international labor market. To do otherwise ignores the basic facts. The work force needs global standards for wages, benefits, safety, and working conditions.

Opening the borders would bring many advantages. Workers coming from Mexico and other countries would boost the Social Security system by increasing the number of workers. In some US communities the population is decreasing. School systems are experiencing decreasing numbers of students. The new residents would be welcomed in those communities.

There also would be cultural benefits. The US population is deficient in language skills compared to other industrialized nations. This influx from the south could help the US become bi-lingual. Many in other countries speak three or four languages.

The history of the southern border is relevant today. How did the US acquire that large piece of real estate known as Texas? How much Mexican blood was shed there? We have a debt to pay to our southern neighbors. The least that we should do is either allow the Mexicans to live and work here permanently, or else return Texas to its original owners.

I would say an American traitor is more appropriate.

Never allow anyone to tell you that you are an "illegal" or an "alien".

illegal adj. 1. forbidden by law or statute 2. contrary to or forbidden by official rules or regulations

alien n. 1. a foreign-born resident whohas not been naturalized and who owes allegiance to another country 2. a foreigner

What term would you suggest we use?

" Hate filled, xenophobic speech is filling the airways."

How does "Enforce existing law" translate into 'hate filled, xenophobic speech'?

"Our borders should be wide open. Welcome stations should be built there to assist the travelers."

    What have you been smoking?

"The fight for a fair wage system must include efforts to globalize the international labor market."

Personally, I couldn't care less about the 'international labor market'. I care about the American labor market, which is being flooded by as many as 3 million more workers every year. More workers equals lower wages. No thank you.

"Workers coming from Mexico and other countries would boost the Social Security system by increasing the number of workers."

Another worn-out lie. The costs to the tax-payer FAR outweigh any benefit. Low-wage workers pay MUCH less in taxes, and usually get EITC, food stamps, WIC and other social service programs. Additionally, the increased cost of infrastructure, schools and law enforcement is saddled onto the backs of the middle class.

"In some US communities the population is decreasing. School systems are experiencing decreasing numbers of students. The new residents would be welcomed in those communities."

Doubtful. Most Americans would be grateful for the chance to educate their children in classrooms instead of portable trailers. In English.

" This influx from the south could help the US become bi-lingual. Many in other countries speak three or four languages."

So what. English is the universal language of business. Most multi-lingual people include English in their language repertoire for that reason.

"How did the US acquire that large piece of real estate known as Texas? How much Mexican blood was shed there?"

A war fought 160 years ago. Get over it.

"The least that we should do is either allow the Mexicans to live and work here permanently, or else return Texas to its original owners."

You should really lay off the peyote. You're trippin'.
