On Oct. 17, Livingston Parish sheriff's deputies arrested Christopher Gregus, 45, after he reportedly physically abused a 71-year-old disabled woman and repeatedly stole from her.

The abuse began in August when the victim's daughter died and Gregus, the woman's son-in-law, took over as caretaker, according to court documents.

Between Aug. 1 and Oct. 16, Gregus repeatedly threatened the woman and inflicted several physical injuries, reports Sheriff Jason Ard.

The Livingston Parish News reported:
Gregus also allegedly made withdrawals of more than $1,500 from her bank account without her permission. He is also believed to have taken her prescription medication without her permission.
Gregus has been charged with simple battery of the infirmed, cruelty to the infirmed, exploitation of the infirmed, and theft of medication.

During the course of the investigation, it was discovered that Gregus is in the country illegally from Canada.

Gregus is currently being held at the Livingston Parish Detention Center on an immigration detainer.
