    Tijuana, Baja California —
A Tijuana activist who helped Central American migrants traverse Mexico in a caravan late last year was inside his home last week when someone set a fire in front of his apartment building that scorched his van, Tijuana police confirmed.

The local director for Pueblos Sin Fronteras, Irineo Mújica, leads a pro-immigrant nonprofit group of volunteers that has angered some locals for protecting migrants as they flee widespread violence in their home countries.

Mújica began coordinating small caravans a decade ago to provide migrants a safer way to trek through Mexico where criminal organizations often prey upon lone travelers or smaller groups. Critics accuse him of encouraging immigration and even smuggling migrants to the U.S.-Mexico border.

He said he was inside his apartment in the Campestre Murúa neighborhood of Tijuana on Wednesday with a migrant from El Salvador when someone began torching the entrance to his home.

“We started to see smoke and we ran outside and saw flames everywhere,” Mujica said. “The entrance to my building, where other families live, and my car was engulfed in flames.”

Baja California law enforcement authorities confirmed federal and municipal police are investigating the incident as an arson.

Mújica said neighbors started trying to douse the flames.

The fire left the activist’s car destroyed and piles of ashes and soot in the entrance way to his small apartment building.

“Of course, I’m very worried. This fire could have killed someone. There are families with children in ground floor of this building,” said Mújica.

No one was injured in the April 3 fire, but Mujica said he is considering moving to protect the other people who live there.

Pueblos Sin Fronteras, or People Without Borders, has received widespread criticism from some Tijuana residents, including local politicians, and it has received online threats.

On Feb. 2, for example, the Facebook page of Pueblo Sin Fronteras received a series of threats by messenger from an account from someone who says he lives in Tijuana.

He messaged the group, “die all your (expletive) mother’s children.”

The messages from the same Facebook account went on to say: “I’m a Tijuana man and I have guns and I’m dying to fire them at invaders! “and” so that they know I’m going through the heads of all the members of that damn organization of the devil ... Pueblos Sin Fronteras and that of Ireneo Mújica, that piece of human garbage ...”

The remainder of his message included a direct threat of violence against Mújica’s body parts.

Tijuana police would not say whether the account was being investigated.

In a written statement about the incident, the organization, Pueblos sin Fronteras, partially blamed the federal governments of Mexico and the U.S. for"encouraging a campaign of hatred” against them.

“People Without Borders consider this attack against our partner as a direct result of the irresponsible campaign of hatred, criminalization and defamation that has been promoted by the governments of Mexico and the United States and other public figures,” said the statement. “This has resulted in an increase in threats and hatred against the members of our organization.”

Nobody wants these criminal trespassing illegal invaders in ANY of our countries.

They must be ALL loaded up on buses, barges and every means possible to stop this worldwide now!

STOP DUMPING THEM OVER OUR BORDER! WE DO NOT WANT THEM EITHER! THAT SOLVES NOTHING! SEND THEM HOME A.S.A.P.!

This is only the beginning of this outrage of this invasion against us all.

OPERATION RETURN TO SENDER...WE HAVE ALL HAD IT...NOT JUST IN USA, BUT NOW MEXICO AND ALL OVER EUROPE, ITALY, GREECE, SWEDEN, POLAND, AUSTRIA!!!
ILLEGAL ALIENS HAVE "BROKEN" OUR IMMIGRATION SYSTEM

DO NOT REWARD THEM - DEPORT THEM ALL
