NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- Telecommunications mogul Carlos Slim has announced his intention to launch a channel tailored to the Mexican audience in the United States.

The channel, called Nuestra Visión ("Our Vision" in English), will be provided by Publicidad y Contenido Editorial, a unit of the Slim-owned America Movil, which is the largest cellular phone company in Latin America.

"Nuestra Visión is focused on Mexicans, made by Mexicans and transmitted from Mexico," the narrator says in a promotional video.

For Slim, a Mexican billionaire who has at times claimed the title of richest person in the world, the channel represents an opportunity to plant his flag in a large American television market.

According to the Migration Policy Institute, a nonprofit think tank in Washington, D.C., there were more than 11.7 million Mexican immigrants in the U.S. as of 2014, representing 28% of the country's foreign-born population. The number swells to more than 35 million when including people with Mexican ancestry or Hispanic origin.

Nuestra Visión will compete against a pair of Spanish-language giants already operating in the U.S., Univision and Telemundo. On Tuesday, Univision, which boasts of reaching 97% of Hispanic households in the U.S., announced that it would expand its relationship with the Mexican media company Televisa.

In a joint statement, Univision and Televisa said that each would benefit "from a single, integrated focus on the Hispanic audience in the United States and the domestic Mexican audience, as well as from potential cost synergies from aligned content initiatives."

Nuestra Visión will offer a variety of programming, including news, movies and sports. The channel will launch this year, when tensions between the U.S. and Mexico could be amplified. Slim had expressed concerns about President-elect Donald Trump during last year's campaign, warning that the candidate's economic policies could "destroy" the United States. Trump also accused Slim, who has a major ownership stake in the New York Times, of orchestrating unfavorable coverage of his candidacy.

But both men sang a very different tune last month after meeting for dinner at Trump's resort in Florida. In a statement following the meal, Trump called it "a lovely dinner with a wonderful man."

Those improved relations might give Nuestra Visión a distinct advantage over Univision, which has tried repeatedly and unsuccessfully to land an interview with Trump.

The new TV station will be in Mexico, so the jobs will be too.

Univision channels dropped from Charter-Spectrum lineup

Univision, the nation’s largest Spanish-language media company, filed a lawsuit against Charter in July 2016.

Univision Communications Inc.’s tense standoff over carriage fees paid by cable operator Charter Communications shifted into high gear Wednesday morning when several million homes in the U.S. with Charter-Spectrum service abruptly lost access to Univision’s popular Spanish-language television channels.

Late Tuesday, Univision said Charter no longer had legal authorization to distribute its channels — Univision, UniMas, Galavision and the Univision Deportes Network, and that the cable operator was told to drop the channels from its lineup.

In some cases, it took several hours for Univision’s channels to be removed from Charter’s system.

Charter has maintained that it was operating within its rights.

“We have a contract with Univision and we expect them to honor it," Charter said in a statement late Tuesday.

The blackout includes more than 1.6 million homes in the Los Angeles region with Charter-Spectrum television service.

Univision is the nation’s largest Spanish-language media company. The outage does not affect customers of Dish Network, DirecTV, Comcast or other pay-TV systems.

Univision’s dramatic move — after months of on-again, off-again negotiations — comes as Charter and other pay-TV operators are struggling to hold the line on programming costs. It follows a lawsuit that Univision, based in New York, filed against Charter in July 2016.

Univision alleged in its suit that the cable operator was illegally trying to adopt the fee structure of Time Warner Cable, which Charter acquired last spring. Charter has also faced legal action from Fox News and Showtime Networks.

Time Warner Cable, a much larger cable-TV system than Charter, generally had negotiated lower rates than Charter.

“Charter still refuses to value Univision’s content and the audience we serve,” Univision said late Tuesday in a statement, adding that the Connecticut-based Charter had rejected Univision’s “repeated, good-faith efforts to reach an agreement.”

“As a result, Charter has decided to deny its subscribers continued access to Hispanic America’s most popular entertainment and sports, and most trusted news content,” Univision said.

Los Angeles represents the largest market for both Charter and Univision. The Spanish-language broadcaster’s No. 1 station is KMEX-TV Channel 34. KMEX's local newscasts typically beat several of the English-language television stations in Los Angeles.

“The blackout of Univision on Charter Spectrum cable — which includes millions of former Time Warner Cable customers — is an unfortunate development that shows how disparities in bargaining power between programmers and distributors can leave customers in the lurch,” John Bergmayer, senior counsel with the Public Knowledge nonprofit orgnaization, said in a statement Wednesday morning.
