Castro's death could spark refugee crisis
Castro's death could spark refugee crisis
MIAMI (AFP) - As Cuban President Fidel Castro nears his 80th birthday, US authorities are reportedly planning for the fallout in Florida from his eventual death fear a dangerous mass migration of Cubans.
Florida is home to the some 800,000 Cubans and Cuban-Americans, most of whom have been eagerly awaiting the end to Castro's communist rule for decades.
The University of Miami, with the American Red Cross, nonprofit groups and local, state and federal agencies, have completed a comprehensive plan for the days after Castro's death, The Miami Herald said.
"The greatest fear among the planning organizations is another mass migration along the lines of the Mariel boatlift in 1980 or the 1994 Balsero crisis. Much of the report is dedicated to planning for such an event, such as assigning a county official as the point person and assigning specific tasks to deal with migrants," it said.
The University of Miami's Cuba Transition Project drafted the report after two years of meetings among agencies including the US Agency for International Development, the Department of Homeland Security, the Red Cross, Miami-Dade's Office of Emergency Management and Miami-Dade Public Schools.
The government is prepared for the worst, Carlos Castillo, assistant Miami-Dade fire chief who chaired the subcommittee to coordinate local response, told the paper.
"The Coast Guard will take whatever action is necessary to protect the coast," he said. "As far as the airport and port of Miami, the county and federal governments will take whatever steps necessary to ensure the safety of the people in South Florida. If necessary, the federal government has the ability to close the airports and seaports."
During the 1980 Mariel boatlift, about 120,000 Cuban migrants arrived in Miami over a six-month period.
Cuban exiles triggered the mass migration by taking to the Florida Straits to bring over relatives and friends.
Cuba blames the US policy of granting immediate asylum to Cubans who reach US shores for encouraging many Cubans' risky illegal crossings of the shark-infested Florida Straits.
The United States sends home Cubans picked up at sea, but continues to grant asylum to any Cuban who touches US soil.
Castro, in power since 1959, is due to turn 80 in August.

Interesting and inevitable story. Along with the wave of Cubans would come others from different countries to take advantage of the massive rush for the US. We have enough problems now with illegal aliens that would be all we need.

Why would they leave - maybe they will like it better when Castro is gone.
It seems our government has plans for Cuba when Castro dies - maybe it will include keeping people in Cuba.Join our efforts to Secure America's Borders and End Illegal Immigration by Joining ALIPAC's E-Mail Alerts network (CLICK HERE)

Americans are facing the prospect of our government granting amnesty to 10 million illegals (not including the 10 million others, which will choose to remain here illegally), without any real plan for border security.
Our President, without the consent of the American government or it's citzens, made an agreement with the leaders of Mexico and Canada to erase our borders and redistribute the wealth of the non-elite (what little of it we have left).
Now, when Castro dies, every cuban is going to making a bee-line to the U.S.?
Then what will we do?
LAST AMERICAN TO CUBA IS A ROTTEN EGG!!!

It's hard to say, alot of Cubans were born here, this is their home. I believe there will be hundreds of thousands of people going in both directions. If claimed a free society, we will have to compete big time with them in the entertainment and vacationing industries, not to mention sugar, tobacco, booze, clothing, you name it. Cuba International Airways! If most Cubans go back and not many from there come to the US, it would relieve some of the stresses of living in S FLA (you might think there isn't any, but there is).

Castro
NO, Rockfish, every Cuban I know, says they would NOT go back, that they feel badly about it, but that Castro has destroyed the infrastructure so much, that....and that there will be a political nightmare when Castro dies.
Besides they love this country of opportunity and will try to bring any family they have left in Cuba, here.
THE WET FOOT, DRY FOOT ACT IS INSANE. It encourages 3 sets of criminals; the person who pays the smuggler, the smuggler and the smuggelee. (They know they are breaking the law.) Then, when they set foot on land, they get to stay! CRAZY.TIME'S UP!

Good to hear from you, curiouspat.

Although the wealthy are not the majority who state they won't go back, I believe that eventually half or most of the Cuban people will. Unless the love of their country has deminished over the generations.

The one problem with the wealthy going back (per conversations I've had with strong Cuban Nationalists, is that their wealth is now here. Their properties were taken over by the Communists, and so far, in court, they have been unable to get them back (unless I've missed something in the news.)
Castro is an evil genius. And we've let him get away with it.
He encourages the disenchanted to go....where?...you guessed it...MIAMI.
TIME'S UP!

I hope they don't come here. After his death, would be a great time to re-invent their country....unless Castro has made some kind of deal with crazy Hugo Chavez.
Do not vote for Party this year, vote for America and American workers!
