Chicago's sick joke
News
Round-up rumors and other myths
April 30, 2006
MYTH: Government officials are using the rallies as opportunities to round up and arrest illegal immigrants.
FACT: U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has been cracking down on employers. And ICE recently arrested 125 people in a 10-day crackdown in the Midwest. But the government has to have probable cause to arrest someone, which makes mass roundups highly unlikely. ICE spokesman Tim Counts said the agency "does not engage in random sweeps. . . . ICE's enforcement actions are carefully planned operations that result from investigative leads and intelligence."
Rumors that the Chicago Police Department will round up undocumented people at the march are also false, according to Ald. Danny Solis (25th). "Not only is it false, it is also illegal in the city of Chicago for city employees to take that role," Solis said Thursday.
MYTH: IIlegal immigrants are eligible for all public benefits, like welfare.
FACT: Immigrants can attend public schools and get care in emergency rooms. But they are not eligible for most forms of public aid, such as food stamps and Medicaid, said Professor Sioban Albiol of the DePaul University College of Law.
MYTH: Immigration is more of a hot-button issue now than it has ever been in U.S. history.
FACT: Strong reaction to changes in immigration trends is nothing new in American politics. In the 1850s, the "Know Nothing" movement opposed the influence of Catholic immigrants, especially Irish Catholics, on U.S. politics. In 1924, the National Origins Act set quotas based on nationality, limiting immigration of people from southern and eastern Europe.
