Wilman V. Melgar, 26, described by police as an illegal immigrant from Honduras, was arrested Friday, Dec. 28 after a report of a disturbance at the Siesta Motel on Route 22. A female was reporting that Melgar had just held a knife to back of her neck and threatened to kill her, police said.

The phone line disconnected and the dispatcher lost contact with the caller. Officers arrived within minutes and made contact with both parties still arguing in the room. Melgar refused officers’ commands to exit the room and show his hands. When he began reaching into his pocket, an officer pulled him from the room and escorted him to the ground were he was handcuffed without incident.

A search of his pocket revealed a folding pocket knife. An additional knife was located on the floor of the disheveled room, police said. After the investigation was completed, Melgar was charged with assault, making terroristic threats and unlawful possession of a weapon.

After fingerprinting Melgar at headquarters, it was determined that he was an illegal immigrant from Honduras and he had an Immigration (ICE) warrant for his arrest. He was lodged in the Hunterdon County Jail in default of $20,000 bail and the ICE detainer.
