    Coast Guard brings record drug haul to San Diego

    SAN DIEGO – The crew of the Coast Guard cutter Boutwell will turn over more than 28,000 pounds of cocaine worth an estimated $424 million to federal drug agents Thursday morning, according to Coast Guard officials.

    The drugs were seized in several different operations as part of increased U.S. and allied patrols off the coast of South America and in the Caribbean Basin, which are areas notorious for drug smuggling.

    The confiscated narcotics will be displayed at a news conference Thursday morning at Naval Base San Diego.

    The 28,000 lbs. of drugs seized in the raids are a record for the eastern Pacific region, the Coast Guard said.
