Last Update: 1:36 pm
GULF OF MEXICO - Authorities with the South Padre Island Coast Guard seized two Mexican fishing boats and detained eight crew members for illegally fishing in U.S. waters off the Texas Coast.
Officials said the crew on the Mexican fishing boats had fish and sharks on board. The bust happened about 25 miles south of the border.
A worker on an offshore rig first spotted the boats. The crew members are in Border Patrol custody.

Maritime territory of the United States
Territorial waters
The Government of the United States of America has claims to the oceans in accord with international law, which delineates a zone of territory adjacent to territorial lands and seas. United States protects this marine environment, though not interfering with other lawful uses of this zone.
The United States jurisdiction has been established on vessels, ships, and artificial islands (along with other marine structures).
The primary enforcer of maritime law is the United States Coast Guard. Federal and state governments share economic and regulatory jurisdiction over the waters owned by the country.
