DENVER (AP) - A Colombian man arrested after raids on medical marijuana operations in Colorado has been indicted by a grand jury on charges of possessing a firearm after entering the country on a non-immigrant visa.

Hector Diaz had earlier been charged with the same crimes by prosecutors, who followed up with a grand jury indictment to expedite court proceedings.

Colorado Justice Department spokesman Jeffrey Dorschner said Wednesday Diaz is due back in court on Thursday to be advised of the indictment.

On Nov. 21, federal and local authorities executed 16 federal search warrants on marijuana operations. Authorities say investigators found 5 assault rifles, one shotgun and 5 handguns, as well as a large cache of ammunition at a residence occupied by Diaz. Diaz is charged with possessing one of those weapons.

DENVER - A man arrested in connection with multiple medical marijuana raids last week in Denver appeared in federal court Wednesday afternoon, outlining why he thinks he should be released until his trial.

Hector Diaz, 49, of Colombia, is in federal custody. Prosecutors will argue he should remain in custody because they consider him a flight risk.

Diaz was charged Friday with illegal possession of firearms. He was in the United States on a visa that federal prosecutors say preclude him from being in possession of a firearm. A photograph taken of him shows him holding large assault rifles with other weapons on his belt.

When Diaz was arrested, police searched his Cherry Hills Village home in the 50 block of Sedgwick Drive. They found five assault rifles, one shotgun and five handguns, as well as a large stash of ammunition.

Federal Magistrate Judge Craig Schaffer told the court he thinks he should be released until trial under certain conditions. Those conditions cannot be met before the weekend so Diaz will remain in custody until a status hearing on Monday, Dec. 2 at the earliest.

If convicted, Diaz faces 10 years in federal prison and up to a $250,000 fine.
