Congressman tells Greg Abbott to bus immigrants to Democrats's homes in sanctuary cities

AUSTIN, Texas — The House Republican leading the charge to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas wants Gov. Greg Abbott to make the border crisis an unavoidable problem for Democrats in sanctuary cities.

Rep. Pat Fallon of Texas told the Washington Examiner in an interview this week that Abbott’s nine-month operation of offering immigrants free bus transportation to Chicago, New York City, and Washington was not going far enough to hold Democrats' feet to the fire.

“Personally, if I was the governor right now, I would have — I would ask every single person in Texas, ‘Would you like to go to San Francisco?’ And send them right to Nancy Pelosi’s house.

I would then say, ‘Would you like to go to New York?’ Send them to Chuck Schumer's house. ‘Oh, how about Dick Durbin in Illinois?’” Fallon said.

The fallout for how immigrants are helped once in the U.S. ought to rest on the shoulders of the politicians and cities that have welcomed them, he said. Sanctuary cities and states are jurisdictions where the police will not cooperate with federal police as they attempt to arrest illegal immigrants in the community, including those with criminal histories determined to be in the country.

"You have this on your moral conscience," Fallon said.

To help local officials whose communities are being overwhelmed by illegal immigrants who are being dropped off by federal officials at the direction of the Biden administration, Texas sent in charter buses to border towns to help alleviate the pressure on local transportation and shelters.

The first charter bus arrived in Washington on April 13, exactly a week after the governor announced the operation.

“We are sending them to the United States's capital, where the Biden administration will be able to more immediately address the needs of the people that they are allowing to come across our border," Abbott said in April, adding that passengers would be dropped off at the “steps of the United States Capitol," though the drop-offs have occurred several blocks away because regular traffic is not allowed on Capitol grounds.

Abbott has sent buses on several occasions to outside the vice president’s residency in northwest Washington, including in September, again in October, and on Christmas Eve, but he has not sent buses to the White House despite promising early on to drop people off in President Joe Biden's backyard.

Fallon said an expansion of the operation was warranted because immigrants released into the U.S. were not asylum-seekers. Claiming asylum at the border is not a requirement to be released into the U.S., and immigrants have years to make a claim.

Fallon said: "Ninety-nine percent of these people are economic migrants. ... They're not asylum-seekers."

The second-term congressman is looking for a long-term solution to the border crisis. Fallon said he expects one of two men will win the Republican presidential nomination in 2024 — and both have strongly criticized Biden for the burgeoning situation at the border, where more than 5 million people have been encountered attempting to enter the country without permission since February 2021.

"This is a two-man race right now," Fallon said. "This is Ron DeSantis v. Donald Trump, and this is about the future direction of the party."

Abbott did not respond to a request for comment on Fallon's expanded busing proposal.
