David Clarke: ‘You Have to Strip Away the Emotion’ from DACA Debate

Former Milwaukee sheriff says it's time for lawmakers 'to put on their big boy pants and do their job'

by Kathryn Blackhurst | 06 Sep 2017 at 11:41 AM

Former Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke said that once “you strip away the emotion” clouding the national debate over the fate of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, it’s an “easy” decision to make during an interview Wednesday on “The Laura Ingraham Show.”

Clarke, who announced Tuesday that he would be joining a pro-President Donald Trump super PAC, blasted liberals and moderate Republicans who ripped into Trump for announcing Tuesday that he would be ending DACA with a six-month delay allowing Congress time to act. Saying that former President Barack Obama violated the Constitution by creating DACA through an executive order in 2012, Clarke praised Trump for sending DACA “squarely where it belongs.”

"I’m just getting tired of all the crocodile tears being shed by the people on the left — people like [Senate Minority Leader] Chuck Schumer, other liberal organizations — about the plight of these individuals," Clarke said. "And it is high-time in America for the GOP especially — I think all leaders — but for the GOP in Congress to put on their big boy pants and do their job."

Ever since reports began circulating over the weekend that Trump would end DACA, Democrats and many Republicans announced their support for legal status for the roughly 800,000 DREAMers who were brought to the U.S. illegally as children. Clarke, a staunch supporter of immigration enforcement, lauded Trump for sending DACA to Congress instead of issuing an executive order that dealt with the dilemma himself.

"President Trump put this thing — DACA — squarely where it belongs, and it’s in the Congress," Clarke said. "Under Article 1, Section 8, it says that Congress shall form rules on naturalization — not the president of the United States through an executive action. So actually what President Trump did in reversing this Obama-era policy was restore the Constitution and the rule of law."

But the left, especially, appears to be incapable of having this discussion because it allows emotions to cloud the conversation, Clarke said.

"You have to strip away the emotion. When you strip away the emotion, this is an easy thing to arrive at," Clarke said. "The Constitution is not secondary. The Constitution is primary. It is the bedrock of this republic and of our representative democracy. So for people today who just kind of want to chew it away, this is a very slippery slope."

But the country allowed Obama to "sidestep the Constitution" for "eight years" while "nobody said a damn thing," Clarke lamented.

"Now all of a sudden President Trump comes along to restore the rule of law and put the Constitution at its rightful place at the heart of everything that we do, whether it be politically, whether it be legislatively. And all of a sudden he’s the bad guy," Clarke said. "This is just — it’s almost like you wake up some days and you say, 'Is this real?'"

I recently read somewhere that Sheriff Clark was slated for a DHS position but John Kelly put the skids on it. Anyone else hear this?

Ex-Sheriff David Clarke Blocked From White House Post

The controversial former sheriff accepts a position with a Pro-Trump PAC after John Kelly crushed his dream of working in the White House.

Former Milwaukee Sheriff David Clarke has long sought a position with the Trump administration. But that looks unlikely—at least while White House Chief of Staff John Kelly has a say in these matters.

Fox News reports that Clarke, who recently resigned as sheriff, announced on Tuesday that he landed a senior adviser and spokesman position with the Pro-Trump super PAC America First Action.

In a statement, reported by Fox, Clarke called it “an honor to join” the PAC because he shares its values.

“It gives me the chance to do what I love most—promote President Trump’s agenda, including his fierce support for the American law enforcement officer, and ensure the will of the American people who got President Trump elected is not derailed by the left or the self-serving Washington establishment,” he continued.

However, the Trump loyalist reportedly had his heart set on working directly for the administration, for which he was under consideration for several weeks, The Daily Beast reported.

White House sources told The Daily Beast that Kelly blocked Clarke from getting a position in the West Wing and at the Department of Homeland Security.

Part of Clarke’s problem is that he comes with a ton of unwanted baggage. When Kelly served as DHS secretary, he opposed hiring the former sheriff because Clarke oversaw a shoddy Milwaukee jail system in which four people—including a baby—died.

This is the latest example of Kelly flexing his muscles. He recently limited the access of White House adviser Omarosa Manigault to the President Donald Trump. She was accused of “triggering” the president by feeding him unvetted news reports that distracted his attention.
