VISTA – About 50 demonstrators on opposing sides of the illegal immigration debate faced off outside Vista City Hall Tuesday as council members prepared to consider outlawing local hiring of day laborers.
Some 40 immigrant-rights advocates marched in the early evening to the Eucalyptus Avenue municipal complex, where they found themselves face-to-face with 10 representatives of the Minutemen, an organization pressing for stricter controls on illegal immigration.

The groups were peaceful, sheriff's officials said.

Both groups were seeking to make their opinions known about the proposed ordinance, which the City Council was to take under consideration at a regularly scheduled meeting.
