Dick Armey blasts Republicans on immigration, saying GOP is alienating Latino voters

Former House Majority Leader Dick Armey, a Texas Republican who now works closely with Tea Party activists, said today that Republicans are alienating Hispanic voters with their rhetoric on the immigration issue.

"These guys are trying to blow it," Armey said at a National Press Club luncheon.

Armey, one of the creators of the "Contract with America" that launched the 1994 Republican revolution, says that the party needs to be more careful when it discusses immigration reform — something the former University of North Texas economics professor strongly supports.

Armey says the issue of immigration needs to be handled with "sensitivity." He described the hard-edged, immigrant-bashing rhetoric of former Republican congressman and presidential candidate Tom Tancredo, who spoke at a recent Tea Party convention in Tennessee, as "destructive."

"Republicans have to get this right and get off this goofiness," Armey said. "Ronald Reagan said 'tear down this wall.' Tom Tancredo said 'build this wall.' Which is right?"

With Latinos forming the fastest-growing electoral bloc in the nation, Armey says the GOP seems to be saying, "Let's go out and alienate them."

Armey blamed the U.S. government, not Hispanics, for the dysfunctional immigration system.

"The way they treat these people is rude and callous and cruel," he said of the federal immigration agency formerly known as the Immigration and Naturalization Service.

Armey said socially conservative Latino and African American voters are natural constituents for the GOP — if Republicans don't push them away.

"The party was born with the Emancipation Proclamation," he said. But today, he added, "it can't get a black vote to save its life."

What a crock! No wonder he's the "former" rep! McCain LOST the election and he was a co-sponsor for the shamnesty bill. WHat's that tell ya Dicky?? AMERICANS want enforcement, not amnesty. Get a clue, loser!

Hard-edged immigrant bashing? I think Dick means illegal immigrant. But I guess alienating Republicans and AMERICAN CITIZENS who believe in the rule of law means nothing....

Once again, the feelings of illegal invaders and those who support them are apparently more important to Dick than preserving the rule of law in this country.

People can come, and people can go Mr. Armey. We need to see that people come legally. A fence is necessary due to trade policies like NAFTA, due to violence from Mexico, due to terrorists who cross, and due to millions of illegal aliens that have no legal right to be in the United States.

Go away Dick Armey. Your audience is small. Talk to open border Democrats and RINOs. The rest of us have left you behind.
