Rhode Island Child Dies From Enterovirus

    October 1, 2014 11:06 AM

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (CBS Connecticut/AP) — The Rhode Island health department says a child has died from complications of an unusual respiratory virus that has been affecting children across the U.S.

Health officials said Wednesday that the child died last week of a staph infection associated with the enterovirus 68 infection.
Department spokeswoman Christina Batastini said there have been no deaths in Rhode Island directly attributed to the enterovirus 68 infection. Batastini said she could not say where the child lived or was treated.

Mild cases of the 68 infection can cause fever, runny nose and coughs but severe ones can lead to difficulty breathing. The strain isn’t new but it’s rarely seen.

AFP reports more than 400 children nationwide have been sickened by the enterovirus. Health officials are investigating nine cases of muscle weakness or paralysis in Colorado due to the virus.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention last week sent doctors an alert about the polio-like cases and said the germ — enterovirus 68 — was detected in four out of eight of the sick children who had a certain medical test. The status of the ninth case is unclear.

The virus can cause paralysis but other germs can, too. Health officials don’t know whether the virus caused any of the children’s arm and leg weaknesses or whether it’s just a germ they coincidentally picked up.

“That’s why we want more information,” and for doctors to report similar cases, said the CDC’s Dr. Jane Seward.

The cases occurred within the last two months. All nine children are being treated at Children’s Hospital Colorado in Aurora, and most are from the Denver area. A hospital spokeswoman said the patients’ families didn’t want to talk to the media.

The nine children had fever and respiratory illness about two weeks before developing varying degrees of limb weakness. None seems to have a weak immune system or other conditions that might predispose them to severe illness, but the cases are still being investigated, Seward said. Investigators don’t think it’s polio — eight of the nine children are up to date on polio vaccinations. It’s not known whether the limb weakness or paralysis is temporary or will be long-lasting.

The cases come amid an unusual wave of severe respiratory illness from enterovirus 68. The germ is not new — it was first identified in 1962 and has caused clusters of illness before, including in Georgia and Pennsylvania in 2009 and Arizona in 2010. Because it’s not routinely tested for, it’s possible the bug spread in previous years but was never distinguished from colds caused by other germs.

This year, the virus has gotten more attention because it has been linked to hundreds of severe illnesses. Beginning last month, a flood of sick children began to hit hospitals in Kansas City, Missouri, and Chicago — kids with trouble breathing, some needing oxygen or more extreme care such as a breathing machine. Many — but not all — had asthma before the infection.

“And then it can become a persistent infection in the lungs,” infectious disease expert John Chia told CBS Los Angeles. “Or it can go through the blood stream and reach the central nervous system. That’s how I think poliomyelitis occurred in those cases.”

The CDC has been testing a limited number of specimens from very sick children around the country, and as of Thursday reported 277 people in 40 states and the District of Columbia with enterovirus 68.

Health officials know enterovirus can cause paralysis. Published reports count at least two people in the U.S. who were paralyzed and were found to have the virus in their spinal fluid. One was a New Hampshire 5-year-old in 2008; details are scant on the second case, a young adult, which happened many years earlier.

Earlier this year, Stanford University researchers said they had identified polio-like illnesses in about 20 California children over about 18 months. Two tested positive for enterovirus 68. CDC officials say it’s still not clear if the virus was a factor in those cases.

Paralysis is a rare complication of enterovirus 68 infection, but with so many more cases of enterovirus being reported this year, it may not be surprising to see that problem, said Dr. Larry Wolk, chief medical officer of the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment.

The CDC is asking doctors to report patients 21 or younger who developed limb weakness since August 1 and who have had an MRI exam that showed abnormalities in the nerve tissue in the spinal cord.

Seward said a test that showed the germ in a patient’s spinal fluid would be good evidence that the virus was causing paralysis. Unfortunately, lab tests of spinal fluid often fail to identify bugs like enterovirus 68, even if they’re present, she added.

CDC: 4 People With Enterovirus D68 Have Died

    By Brenda Goodman, MA

AUDIO - 4 PEOPLE HAVE DIED FROM Enterovirus D68

Four people have died after catching enterovirus D68, according to the CDC. It’s unclear what role the virus played in their deaths, though.

State and local health departments “are continuing to investigate,” says CDC spokeswoman Darlene Foote in an e-mail to WebMD.

One of the people, a child, died last week in Rhode Island, according to the state Department of Health. The child had a Staph infection in addition to enterovirus D68, and died from sepsis, a buildup of toxic chemicals in the bloodstream.

In a press release, health officials say the combination is rare.

The Boston Globe reports that the child was a 10-year-old girl. She died within a day of developing symptoms.

"We are all heartbroken to hear about the death of one of Rhode Island's children," says Michael Fine, MD, director of the Rhode Island Department of Health.
But he says the circumstances of the death were unusual, and most children recover without any complications. "Many of us will have EV-D68. Most of us will have very mild symptoms and all but very few will recover quickly and completely."

Local health departments have not released information on the other three deaths.

Enterovirus 68 spreads and kills children as U.S. borders remain open

Fox News screenshot Enterovirus 68, the respiratory infection that has taken the nation by storm, is spreading unlike previous outbreaks of the virus, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as reported by the New York Times. The latest report on the disease by the CDC claims that nearly 500 cases of the virus’ infection have been confirmed as of this week. Medical experts have said that the real number of Enterovirus 68 cases is most likely much greater because many with symptoms have not been tested.

On Friday, ABC News reported that there are three more cases of Enterovirus 68 at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Additionally, there have been four deaths very possibly linked to Enterovirus 68. The threat of the infection and its devastation on its victims seem to be growing daily.

Though the White House, the CDC, and the major news outlets aren’t making the obvious connection to the recent reports of immigration and massive acceptance of refugee children along the United States’ southern border, it is logically on the minds of Americans near and far. The refugee crisis that took hold of the nation this past summer caused political riffs between liberal Democrats and conservative Republicans. Politically, Democrats – lead by the likes of Rep. Nancy Pelosi – insisted that accepting the throngs of children into the United States was the right thing to do. Such persons have become more increasingly quiet on the topic as the spread of childhood diseases and more has swept the country.

It has been reported that many of these children who entered the United States via the liberally-promoted refugee barrage at the border were allowed to enter the country without any health screening whatsoever – even though it is logical to believe these people could be bringing in diseases from the far corners of the globe. Furthermore, Joe Walsh on WIND-AM talk radio in Chicago insists that public schools have been ordered to accept these children - from throughout the world – without any health screenings being given to the children entering our nation’s schools.

While the infectious disease is usually not fatal or severe, most of the patients who are seriously affected are children between the ages of 10 and 15. Parents are advised to be on the lookout for their children’s difficulty in breathing, complaints of chest pains, and signs of wheezing as their lips turn blue. Youngsters with asthma and other chronic lung conditions are reportedly most vulnerable to the infection. Should any child show signs of the infection, immediate care for him or her is strongly advised.

While Ebola has captured the headlines across the United States, Enterovirus 68 cannot and should not be ignored. Now that the United States government has allowed the open borders to exist for the refugees, the possible harmful consequences are apparently beginning to materialize. The government should address the growing threat of Enterovirus 68 rather than sweep it under the rug with other White House scandals of the recent past. This latest scandal is allegedly killing children.

As recently as last week, the BBC asked in an international-consumed report why the United States is allowing so many children to cross its borders. Furthermore, the BBC’s report states that President Barack Obama is under pressure to fix the open borders as unaccompanied children continue to enter the country. Apparently, there needs to be much more pressure asserted - especially in light of the United States' growing health concerns that have coordinated with the open borders.

Enterovirus D68 (EV-D68, according to a recent report by the Center of Disease Control, is one of more than 100 non-polio enteroviruses. The symptoms of the EV-D68 infection on the mild side may include fever, runny nose, sneezing, cough, and body and muscular aches. Symptoms on the more severe side may include wheezing and difficulty in breathing. The virus spreads via infected person’s respiratory secretions, such as saliva, nasal mucus, or sputum. An infected person’s cough, sneeze or common-surface touch attributes to the spreading of the virus. The report advises that persons who have a respiratory illness contact their physician if their breathing difficulties are worsening.

FRIGHTENING!! Over 500 American Kids Struck By Enterovirus 68, 2 Deaths, Some Paralyzed

    By Warner Todd Huston
    5:56 pm October 4, 2014

Even as we have all been taken with talk of the Ebola virus another illness has swept the nation and now over 500 kids have come down with the “mystery illness,” Enterovirus 68. Two have died and some have become paralyzed.

There are some that say this virus was brought into the country by the tens of thousands of illegals that Obama allowed to swarm into this country because the Enterovirus 68 is common is Central and South America but rare in the USA–at least until this year.

A four-year-old New Jersey preschooler was infected with Enterovirus D-68 at the time the child died last week, the United States Center for Disease Control confirmed Friday night.
The respiratory illness – which carries symptoms such as cough, runny nose, sneezing and body aches – has already been confirmed in seven children in the state and 514 children across the country.
Earlier this week, the CDC said that four patients confirmed to have contracted Enterovirus D-68 had died, but it was not known what role the virus had played in their deaths.
Emily Otrando, a 10-year-old from Cumberland, Rhode Island, died September 22 at Hasbro Children’s Hospital.

Dr. Jane Orient, executive director of the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons, recently said that we might want to look to the recent influx of tens of thousands of illegal immigrants for a root cause.

On September 17, Dr. Orient said:

We don’t know where it’s coming from. …Are there immigrants from Central America, where this disease has allegedly been prevalent before? Should we be [looking at] the virus to see whether it’s like what’s been found in some of these countries that are just sending waves of children across our border and they haven’t been quarantined long enough to make sure they’re not sick?

This has been far more dangerous to Americans than Ebola as the facts on the ground prove… not that Ebola can’t become far worse, but just that E-68 has hit hundreds more Americans right this minute than Ebola has.
