    Guest Opinion: Steve Wright
    Don't believe these immigration myths

Fernando Zapata's 9-5-06 guest opinion mentions "all those anti-immigration rants from Republicans." That in itself is a myth: What he is hearing are Republicans, Democrats and their constituents who are fed up with the increasing waves of illegal immigrants and the federal government's paralysis in dealing with the problem.

Zapata's essay inspired me to think of a few illegal immigration myths I keep hearing.

Immigration and illegal immigration are the same thing.

Most intelligent people realize there is a very real difference between the two. One brings good people into the United States safely and legally, where they can be welcomed and make significant contributions to this country and improve their own quality of life. The other is a chaotic, dangerous activity that is contrary to the will of the American people as expressed in their laws and has a negative effect on our society.

Illegal immigration is not really a crime.

If you think of it only as a case of someone not filling out the necessary paperwork, then maybe so. But those staying in this country illegally have made a conscious decision to violate our federal law. If they drive a car they have made another decision, this time to violate state law by doing so without a valid license and insurance. Illegal immigration has spawned an entire industry of forged documents, phony marriages and countless other frauds to enable people to stay in this country illegally.

Still, illegal immigrants on the whole do not commit serious crimes.

There really is no measure of how many crimes are committed by illegal immigrants. However, with just a cursory note of published crime stories, recent Immigration and Customs Enforcement roundups and prison statistics, one realizes it is more than just a case of just a few bad apples. Human trafficking, sex crimes, money laundering, counterfeiting, identity theft, insurance fraud, single and serial murders — none of these crimes would have happened here if the illegal immigrants who committed them were not in this country.

Without illegal immigration, our economy would collapse and we would starve.

Illegals still make up a small percentage of the total workforce, but are concentrated in a few industries. Though illegal immigrants harvest much of the produce grown in Florida, many of our food staples are imported from other states and countries. It would actually make more sense for farmers to grow their crops outside of the U.S. where labor is cheaper, but then they would lose federal and state subsidies and the use of their land.

    Illegal immigrants keep wages down.

This is generally true, especially for those working in the low-skill jobs. Economics 101 teaches that a surplus of anything means lower prices. In any locality, illegal immigrants compete with low-income legal residents and citizens for low-skill jobs (thereby depressing wages) and housing (thereby increasing housing costs).

But illegal immigrants pay taxes. Well yes and no. Studies show that if they are paying federal taxes and Social Security, then the federal government wins. If, however, they are paid in cash or are hired as independent contractors and given IRS 1099 forms to fill out, then there are probably no federal taxes or Social Security contributions paid.

It doesn't take a math genius to figure out that 11 people living in a two-bedroom apartment will consume more in state and local services than they will ever pay in local property taxes.

    All Hispanics favor illegal immigration.

Anyone opposed to illegal immigration is a racist. This translates to mean "white racist." Racist bigots come in all colors and races, as those who utter this expression clearly demonstrate.

There are many legal immigrants and naturalized citizens in the U.S. from all over the world who oppose illegal immigration. Does that make them racists?

A blanket amnesty is the only solution to illegal immigration because you can't deport 12 to 18 illegal immigrants. Amnesty (and various other citizenship giveaways for token payments) or mass deportation are not the only possible choices. The 1986 amnesty was a clear example of failed policy that actually encouraged more illegal immigration.

While it is impossible to deport that many people at one time, you can deport some over a period of years. You can also devise policies that encourage illegal immigrants already here to leave on their own and create new safeguards to discourage others from coming here illegally and thinking they can stay and enjoy themselves.

The United States has neither the ability nor the right to do much of anything about illegal immigration.

Just because it is a big job that would take persistent effort over a long time doesn't mean it isn't possible or morally correct. As history tells us, if you can't protect what's yours, others will take it from you.

It is so good to hear the truth for a change.

How much worse off could our country be if it were not for those who just refuse to join in the lies. 300 million thank yous from your fellow countrymen, Steve Wright and to Mr. Zapata for publishing this opinion and for publishing the truth.
