Dozen immigrants in stolen SUV caught in Texas

    February 14, 2014

FLATONIA, Texas (AP) — A stolen SUV chase in Central Texas has led to a dozen people who were crammed in the vehicle facing immigration or human smuggling charges.

The Fayette County Sheriff's Office says a deputy and a Texas trooper on Thursday pursued the SUV on Interstate 10 near Flatonia (flah-TOHN'-yuh), about 80 miles east of San Antonio. Sheriff Keith Korenek says the driver refused to stop until the SUV ran out of roadway atop a hill.

Flatonia police helped arrest the dozen individuals who tried to run.

Investigators detained the driver on human trafficking and evading arrest charges. The other 11 people were turned over to federal immigration agents in the Houston area.

Authorities did not immediately provide additional information on the immigrants or say a possible destination.

FLATONIA, Texas (KXAN) — A man was charged with human trafficking and 11 others were detained after a police chase near Flatonia, Texas on Thursday morning.

Authorities attempted to stop Oscar Orlando Ramos, 28, on Interstate 10 shorty before 9 a.m., but when he refused, a Department of Public Safety trooper and Fayette County deputy gave chase.

After a short pursuit, the Ramos ran out of roadway at the top of a hill and took off on foot along with 11 others packed into the Dodge Durango.

Ramos was captured a short time later by Lobos, the Fayette County sheriff department’s K-9.

The 11 others, who had entered the country illegally, were apprehended and later picked up by immigration and customs enforcement agents.
