Drug lord Guzman extradited to US

Drug lord Guzman extradited to US

Notorious Mexican drug lord Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzman is being extradited to the US, the Mexican government confirmed on Thursday.

Mexican media reported he was at Ciudad Juarez airport.

Mr Guzman is wanted in the US on charges of smuggling vast amounts of drugs into the country.

The leader of the Sinaloa cartel was facing two extradition requests - one from California and another from Texas, where he could face the death penalty.

It is not known yet where he is being sent.

Mr Guzman has escaped from two Mexican high-security jails in the past.

Reporting that Mexico wanted to do this before Obama left so President Trump could not take credit. They certainly waited till the last moments to do this.

Drug lord 'El Chapo' lands in New York after extradition from Mexico, to face judge Friday

El Chapo will face a judge Friday in Brooklyn.

Infamous Mexican drug czar Joaquin (El Chapo) Guzman was extradited Thursday to the United States, where he faces numerous federal charges, authorities said.

“The government (Thursday) handed Mr. Guzman Loera to the U.S. authorities,” the Mexican foreign ministry said in a statement, referring to a court decision rejecting a legal challenge by his lawyers against extradition.

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration took custody of Guzman in Ciudad Juarez, across the border from El Paso, Texas, and a plane carrying him departed for Long Island MacArthur Airport in Islip at 5:31 p.m.

“Every step has been thought through,” a law enforcement source close to the transfer told the Daily News. “Multiple agencies are involved. It’s all of New York law enforcement at all levels.”

The notorious Sinaloa cartel head has been fighting his extradition for more than a year as the U.S.

Justice Department has been working with Mexican authorities to get Guzman to the U.S. to face charges for 12 murder conspiracies, drug trafficking and money laundering.

“The Justice Department extends its gratitude to the Government of Mexico for their extensive cooperation and assistance in securing the extradition of Guzman Loera to the United States,” the agency said in a statement.

Last February, The News reported that Attorney General Loretta Lynch would steer Guzman’s prosecution to Brooklyn Federal Court.

He is set to have his first hearing before a judge Friday, sources said.

He is facing indictments in six jurisdictions.

The Justice Department agreed to the Mexican government’s condition that Guzman would not face the death penalty if extradited — and amended the Brooklyn indictment to remove murder counts.

“It was illegal. They didn’t even notify us,” said lawyer Andres Granados, who accused the government of extraditing his client to distract from nationwide gasoline protests. “It’s totally political.”

Guzman will be housed in the maximum-security Metropolitan Detention Center in Sunset Park, Brooklyn.

The facility is designed for the “containment of extremely dangerous, violent, or escape-prone inmates,” according to the U.S. Bureau of Prisons.

Guzman has become infamous for his Houdini-like escapes from Mexican prisons. The 59-year-old spent months on the run after a stunning escape from a high-security lockup in central Mexico in 2015.

He used an adapted motorcycle on tracks in a mile-long tunnel to pedal his way to freedom. However, his time on the lam was short-lived as he was eventually recaptured following a bloody shootout.

In 2001, Guzman — considered one of the most powerful drug traffickers in the world — escaped from another prison in a laundry cart.

He has been held in a high security prison in Ciudad Juarez since last May.

Earlier Thursday, Mexico’s Supreme Court dismissed appeals by the drug lord against his extradition.

“The judges decided not to hear the (appeal for) protection” from extradition, a court source, who asked not to be identified, told AFP.

That's funny when you think about it because Trump could care less about Chapo. He's going to shut down the entire illegal drug trade which I think he'll realize sooner rather than later will be by legalization with strict regulation, domestic trade only, tax through the FairTax, use taxes only drug users pay to fund better education so users know the real risk and consequences of using drugs and free rehabilitation for anyone who wants or needs it.

In any event, it's funny to me that Mexico thinks Trump would care about the extradition of Chapo to the United States when I'm sure Trump would prefer Chapo be handled by and at the cost of the Mexican government instead of US taxpayers.

Female inmates welcome El Chapo by wildly chanting his name

    By Joe Marino
    January 19, 2017 | 11:54pm | Updated

    He’s bigger than the Beatles.
Mexico drug kingpin “El Chapo” got a rock star’s welcome at a jail in Manhattan Thursday night — as a host of female prisoners screamed his name as his 13-car motorcade arrived.

The lady jail birds could be heard in the cell block overlooking Pearl Street in downtown Manhattan wildly shouting “Chapo! Chapo!” as the Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán was escorted to the facility by the DEA Task Force.

The Mexican drug lord, who was taken from his home country to face charges in the US, arrived at a Long Island airport at about 10 p.m. and was escorted into the city under heavy security.

He is expected to appear at federal court in Brooklyn Friday.

Send him back...I do not want to pay to incarcerate him. He will just continue his drug deals behind bars. We have enough of Mexico's gangs in our jails and prisons. Drop them over the Pacific for all I care.

We need to go back to hanging at sunrise and rid the Earth of these vermin.
