Eagle Pass Border Patrol Agents Encounter Six Large Groups of Migrants in Less Than Two Days

    Release Date: May 18, 2022

DEL RIO, Texas – U.S. Border Patrol agents assigned to Del Rio Sector’s Eagle Pass Station apprehended six large groups of migrants within a 36-hour period, May 16-17, shortly after they illegally entered the United States.

The U.S. Border Patrol categorizes groups of 100 or more undocumented migrants as “large groups.” During the current fiscal year, Del Rio Sector has encountered 112 such groups, which accounts for approximately half the large groups encountered by Border Patrol nationwide.

Around noon, May 16, agents encountered 158 migrants just after making illegal entry into the United States near Normandy, Texas. Six hours later, agents apprehended a group of 220 in the same area.

On May 17, agents encountered 105 migrants shortly after they made entry into the United States near Eagle Pass, at 11 a.m. At approximately that same time, agents apprehended a group of 195 nearby.

At 3 p.m., agents patrolling near Normandy discovered another large group, totaling 174. Later that evening, around 11:20 p.m., agents encountered a group of 124 migrants near Normandy.

Among the large groups were 456 Cubans, 154 Colombians, 96 Venezuelans, 81 Nicaraguans, 61 Peruvians, and 30 Hondurans. Nearly half of those apprehended were single adult men.

All individuals were transported to the Eagle Pass Centralized Processing Center and processed in accordance with Customs and Border Protection policies.

Del Rio Sector continues to see an increase in migrant encounters, smuggling events and sex offender apprehensions. During the current fiscal year, beginning Oct. 1, 2021, through April 30, Del Rio Sector agents have encountered 236,159 migrants.
