Emails detail how Oakland mayor consulted with illegal immigration activists prior to ICE raids

Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf consulted with illegal immigration activists before she tipped off the public about an upcoming ICE raid, Fox News reported. And ICE believes her action allowed hundreds of illegal immigrants to evade detention.

Now Schaaf is under review by the Justice Department.

Why did she do it?

“Oakland has a legal right to be a sanctuary city and we have not broken any laws,” Schaaf said last month. “We believe our community is safer when families stay together.”
Schaaf’s stance has angered both ICE officials and the Trump administration, according to the report.

Earlier this week, President Donald Trump said in California, “What happened in Oakland was a disgrace to our nation.”

KPIX-TV obtained emails showing that Schaaf contacted Centro Legal de la Raza hours before the announcement to discuss what employers should do during a raid.
The non-profit group focuses on providing legal aid to those in the country illegally. It also has an “ICE Activity Hotline” listed on its website.

“Centro Legal has been at the forefront of efforts to curtail unlawful collaboration between local law enforcement agencies and federal immigration authorities in order to prevent unjust deportations and keep immigrant families together,” its website states.

Schaaf also spoke with a Catholic priest at St. Jarlath’s Church and Emma Paulino at Oakland Community Organizations, KPIX reported. Paulino appeared with Schaaf during a press conference that warned about the raid.

On Friday, Paulino told Fox News the two discussed whether or not to share the information and how do it in a way to minimize panic.

“It was about if we should share what we know and how to share that information in a responsible way so to not create panic in the community,” Paulino said. “People live in fear already.”

Were her actions illegal?

Families of victims of illegal immigrant crimes and groups that lobby for less migration into the U.S. have called for Schaaf to be prosecuted.

“As far as Libby Schaaf is concerned, what she did is nothing short of obstruction of justice,” Ira Mehlman of the Federation for American Immigration Reform told Fox News.

“She is not compelled to assist ICE in doing its job, but she certainly has no right to interfere with ICE carrying out its lawful duties,” Mehlman said. “In our view, the U.S.

Department of Justice should look into the matter and prosecute her for obstruction if the circumstances warrant legal action.”

OAKLAND (KPIX 5) – Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf shocked the nation when she issued a tweet and press release on February 24 warning about impending ICE raids.

Schaaf refuses to say how she learned about the ICE raids, only saying it was not from official sources.

“I felt that it was my duty to share the information,” Schaaf said.

In emails we obtained through a public records request, we didn’t find out who her sources were, but we do know who she was talking to before she made her big announcement.

Emails reveal that hours before the announcement, a group called Centro Legal de la Raza sent the mayor information on what employers should do in case of an ICE raid.

Centro Legal is a non-profit that provides legal services to undocumented immigrants.

The mayor was also talking to other people.

Her office tells KPIX 5 that she also spoke with Father Stephan at St. Jarlath Catholic Church and Emma Paulino at Oakland Community Organizations.

So far, none of them have responded to our requests to comment on their conversations with the mayor.

Hours before the public was warned about ICE raids, some Oakland businesses got a head start, thanks to the mayor.

According to emails, the Oakland Indie Alliance, a group of independent businesses, got a message saying “Important Alert! Credible information ICE Raids in Oakland Sunday 2/25 and Monday 2/26” and “This information comes directly from the Mayor.”

It was three hours later that the mayor sent out a press release that was less specific stating that the raids would be “in the Bay Area, including Oakland” and “starting within the next 24 hours” with no specific end date.

The mayor’s office says it made sense to talk to community leaders before the announcement, and if that meant some people had more time to prepare, it was not intentional.

And get her under oath to answer that question @ how she knew the dates. She is avoiding answering that. Would not be surprised if ICE has a leaker to laraza.

IMO, the US DOJ needs to crack down on lobbying of our government by groups that could reasonably be called "foreign interests." This is at the root of the problem and includes all lobbying on behalf of illegal aliens.. I feel a bit sorry for this mayor ( there would be a huge difference between a federal charge and a general official misconduct charge) but her communications show that there was pressure from these groups. They have a track record of pressuring public officials--- and lobbying on behalf of foreign principals can only be done via registered lobbyists.

I don't in the least. She took an oath to support the Constitution of The United States. She has stood by what she did. She is part of a movement to overthrow what this country is about.

I think there would be a difference between a federal charge and a state law. FYI, I filed a complaint against a local official who has a similar attitude. However, I researched the state law on official misconduct.
