SARITA - One year after the death of a Border Patrol agent, his family is getting a closer look at his life on the job.

The family of Javier Vega Jr. spent their morning surrounded by Border Patrol agents celebrating the work he did.

Vega’s life was cut short last August. Investigators said he was shot and killed during an attempted carjacking. Instead of recounting his last moments, his family chose to honor his life.

CHANNEL 5 NEWS met Vega’s family just north of the Border Patrol checkpoint in Sarita.

“You see us smile, but inside you still have that pain. I don’t think it’s something that will ever go away,” Vega’s mother, Marie Vega, said.

Their son was killed in front of them on August 3, 2014. The Border Patrol K-9 handler was fishing with his parents, wife and kids that afternoon.

Two Mexican nationals fired shots while trying to steal their car. “There’s no pain like losing a child, and you just have to live through it,” Vega’s mother said.

It would be easy for these parents to let grief overcome. Instead they remain brave, determined to keep Vega’s memory alive.

The family spent the anniversary of his death celebrating his life. “We just wanted to see the life that he had with Border Patrol,” she said.

Vega was stationed in Kingsville and spent hours working at the Sarita checkpoint. His family got a look inside the profession he loved.

“It wasn’t just a job, it’s his family away from home,” the agent’s mother said.

The former Marine put his family and country above all else. In his absence, his brothers and sisters in uniform are stepping in.

“We are so grateful to them, they’ve been there for us, every day,” she said.

Vega’s father was also shot on that day. He was injured in the hip. He is walking, but he said he’s not fully recovered.

The family who lost a son, father and husband, have found themselves the center of an ever growing family of green.
