Federal failure makes illegal immigration our problem
Published Sunday, October 1, 2006
Easy enough for The Island Packet in its recent editorial "Immigration enforcement should stay at federal level" to take the position that it's the federal government's responsibility, not Beaufort County's, to control illegal immigration. There is no one in the world that wishes more than I that federal officials would do their jobs.
However, there are those of us who live in the real world facing the fact that federal officials have failed miserably to enforce immigration law. As a result, legal citizens' lives -- yours, your neighbors' and your loved ones' -- are being permanently and adversely affected by federal incompetence. Polls indicate a super majority of Americans want to preserve our way of life and sovereignty, which is confirmed when I speak with local citizens. It is imperative we halt the invasion by illegal aliens and deport those who have entered the U.S. illegally.
There's hardly a need to regurgitate in detail the harm brought upon our community by allowing a huge illegal population to live here. Briefly, many tens of millions of dollars annually are being spent to educate children of illegals and for medical-social services and law enforcement. The costs go on and on. How does one place a cost on legal businesses owned by U.S. citizens hiring legal labor that no longer are able to compete, as they have to bid against unprincipled businesses that routinely hire illegal labor?
Do readers know that presently there are more than
40 illegal aliens being housed in the Beaufort County jail? Do readers know that an estimated $30 million annually is spent to educate children in English as a Second Language courses in our school district? This figure approaches 25 percent of the entire district's budget, and I believe this figure is conservative. The Beaufort County School District has a policy of not compiling the costs of educating children of illegal aliens. To arrive at an estimate, one method used is to calculate the number of students enrolled in English as a Second Language programs and multiply this figure by the annual cost per student within the district.
Those without a workable knowledge of English are dumbing-down the entire class of English-speaking, legal citizens.
Do readers know of the recent arrest of illegals who possessed sizable quantities of illegal drugs for trafficking? Do readers know that many of the unscrupulous businesses hiring illegal laborers do not deduct any taxes from the illegal employees' pay, thus further burdening our social systems? And there's more, much, much more.
The Packet editorial asks: "Don't county officials have better things to do with their time?" Law-abiding citizens, many of whom are taxpayers in Beaufort County, notice all too painfully that their annual tax bills are spiraling toward the stars. These taxpayers may just rightfully conclude: "No, no, we must stop this law breaking now. Stop spending the many tens of millions of dollars annually of our hard-earned money on services for illegal aliens." This problem is one that county officials must address now, by default, as federal officials have proved totally
ineffectual and clueless.
Costs for yard service, greens fees and a house painting might escalate marginally for a while. Many legal subcontractors have been forced from our area because they could not compete. The base of legal subcontractors will have to rebuild somewhat, which will take a little time. However, when marginally higher interim costs are compared with countywide taxpayer costs for services rendered to illegal aliens and their families, we will actually come out ahead economically, while staying true to our principles and abiding by the law, thus holding the moral and ethical high ground and setting an example for all.
The Packet further asks: "What is the point of a county ordinance that would affect only those businesses with county business licenses?" Beaufort County, along with the municipalities of Hilton Head Island, Bluffton, Beaufort and a few others in the county, have many cooperative intergovernmental agreements. Law-abiding, taxpaying citizens should demand that all county municipalities agree to adopt the "Beaufort County Illegal Immigration Relief Ordinance" through
intergovernmental agreements. If a municipality's council chooses not to cooperate, their citizens will certainly have an opportunity to vote for council members who will have the strength and integrity to begin addressing our problem, mandating our laws be respected and enforced.
The Packet's editorial does have it right in concluding, "Yes, too many business owners are gaming the system, here and elsewhere across the country." You bet, and it's time to punish those business owners who have habitually and knowingly violated our laws. They are appallingly irresponsible citizens. They know by hiring illegal workers they are promulgating the destruction of our social fabric and educational institutions.
Our businesses and their principals, just as any individual citizen, do not have the prerogative to pick and choose which laws to obey. If businesses did not provide jobs for illegal aliens within Beaufort County, illegal aliens would leave the county voluntarily, just as they arrived voluntarily.
I was elected to office in 2002 to represent the interest of the taxpayers of Beaufort County, in addition to pledging to uphold the laws of the United States of America. This ordinance will provide for strict business-license compliance and enforcement throughout the county. I encourage all citizens' to call their council members. Ask for a copy of the proposed ordinance and attend our committee meetings as we discuss and revise the ordinance prior to a final vote.
As we address the astronomical and escalating costs of illegal immigration in Beaufort County, let's not forget to treat everyone with dignity and respect. This ordinance is not designed to discriminate against hard-working people. It is designed to provide the tools that our county and its municipalities do not have in order to effectively enforce the laws we must all follow.
We, the people, will no longer stand idly by while our community and its institutions are overwhelmed, and in some cases face destruction, as a result of our ignoring illegal immigration.

This is such an excellent letter to the editors. It appears they hit her with the old pass the buck routine. This fine lady needs our help.
I hope that many of you will join me in the FOCUS campaign area at this link to assist with this effort in SC.
