Fence Protects College From Drug Smugglers, Illegal ImmigrantsT April 13, 2005

LAREDO, Texas -- The U.S. Marines have landed near the Rio Grande River to build a 10 foot-tall fence on the campus of Laredo Community College.

The mile-long wrought-iron fence is being built to help protect the campus from illegal immigrants and drug smugglers who pass through the area.

"You don't want your kids running out in the streets and you don't want people coming into your property," said Dr. Ramon Dovalina, president of Laredo Community College.

The U.S. Border Patrol said the fence is not designed to be a "border barrier."

"We have a river here that's a natural barrier. We don't need a fence to separate us from Mexico," said John Montoya, of the U.S. Border Patrol.

Last month, police seized 500 pounds of marijuana left by smugglers on the school's tennis courts.

"They'd come through the tennis courts and park their van back here in the parking lot and then they would load them up," said Dovalina.

The U.S. Border Patrol said the fence around the college will help divert smugglers and immigrants to areas where authorities can more easily spot them.

Construction of the fence should be completed in May.
"This country has lost control of its borders. And no country can sustain that kind of position." .... Ronald Reagan

Mr. Montoya, we need more than a river to keep out the illegals. May I suggest not only a barbed fence, (MODERATOR EDIT. READ THE RULES PLEASE!)
