NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -
A North Charleston firefighter critically injured after a drunk driver crashed through an accident scene on June 8 is now conscious and speaking, officials say.
Engineer Darin Kingery remains in the Intensive Care Unit at MUSC, weeks after police say 26-year-old Felix Garcia-Romero plowed through an accident scene, injuring several people. Kingery has undergone several surgeries since the accident, including the amputation of his right leg below the knee.
Officials say he is now listed in stable condition and is expected to remain in ICU for a few more days.
Bond was set at $300,000 for Garcia-Romero, who was charged with three felony counts of driving under the influence. He was also charged with not having a license or insurance and not wearing a seatbelt.
The United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement says Garcia-Romero is an illegal alien from Mexico.
Also injured in the collision was a paramedic, another firefighter, and four others.
Donations to assist Kingery's family can be made at any First Federal Bank location in Darin Kingery's name.
