Five arrested at Los Angeles immigration rally

Five arrested at Los Angeles immigration rally
    The Associated Press

    LOS ANGELES

Five people were arrested at a Los Angeles park on Saturday as police dispersed anti-immigration demonstrators and counter-protestors, authorities said.

Among those arrested for failure to obey was activist Ted Hayes, who organized the anti-immigration rally at MacArthur Park, said Officer April Harding.

Hayes got a permit for a daylong rally of Minutemen activists and a smaller group of protesters demanding reparations for slavery. They were met by a third crowd of about 300 pro-immigrant marchers carrying signs and vowing to prevent the others from marching into the park.

Police handled the situation carefully, mindful of the May Day clash in which officers used rubber bullets and batons to clear immigration reform demonstrations. Officers, some in riot gear, some in shorts and on bicycles, kept the two sides apart.

"There was a lot of shouting, a lot of trash talking, but no violence," Harding said.

When the rally's permit expired on Saturday afternoon, police officials declared the anti-immigrant protesting an illegal assembly. Five people including Hayes refused to disperse and were arrested.

Nice objective reporting by the media. They call those who are against the invasion and against the amnesty as being "anti-immigration". But I have seem them reporting those for the invasion as "immigrant rights activists" and even here they call them "pro-immigrant". What a crock of B.S. Why don't they refer to the illegal alien supporters as being "anti-rule of law supporters" and call those who want the borders and laws enforced "pro-legal immigration activists"?

They always refer to the invaders in the best light possible, calling them hard working, law abiding, honest, strong in family values, etc., but refer to those againt the invasion as restrictionists, nationalists, xenophobes, vigliantes and especially racists.

How can they take the side of the lawbreakers, identity thieves, social services defrauders, America haters, yet blast and insult those who just want to preserve our country, sovereignty and future and have the laws enforced as the bad guys. I have never once seen a news story that protrayed an illegal alien murderer, thug, rapist, gang banger or DUI or hit & run killer as meanly as they treat those who want the borders secured. They are always portrayed as 4.0 GPA students denied a chance at a decent future or as people who deserve a part of the American dream or as those who just want a better life for themselves and their families. Even if they repeatedly enter illegally, steal ID's, forge documents, defraud welfare, bankrupt hospitals and overcrowd our communities, schools and especially jails and prisons.

Many news outlets will refuse to even report on stories where an illegal commits a heinous crime, or leave out the fact that the criminals are illegals or like Whorealdo, totally downplay the fact they are law breaking invaders.

According to another article the police estimated 150 protesters on each side.

The reporting is just WRONG - There were TWO groups NOT three!!
There was Ted's group, about 80% black with some Minutemen. There were about 100 of us, and about 150 counter protesters.

Yes, the reporting is very misleading. It made it sound as if the blacks were protesting on thing, and the Minutemen were protesting something else all together different. Also, the articles would have us believe there were more whites protesting than blacks. Of course they said the counter-protesters were of mixed races (look mostly Hispanic to me).

LA Police Called to Separate Demonstrators
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Police broke up a demonstration in a Los Angeles park for and against immigration policies and arrested one of the organizers.

About 300 people took part in the protest against illegal immigration organized by homeless advocate Ted Hayes. That, in turn, drew counter-demonstrators.

A line of police separated both sides at Leimert Park. There was a lot of shouting but no violence.

Just before 4 p.m. officers said the parade permit had expired and dispersed the crowd. Hayes continued to march and wave a banner and was eventually arrested.

    LAPD breaks-up immigration standoff
    Staff and Wire Services

Article Last Updated: 06/23/2007 07:41:53 PM PDT

LOS ANGELES - A coalition of Minutemen and black activists met a larger group of pro-immigrant marchers at a demonstration at Leimert Park today.

Officers, some in riot gear, some in shorts and on bicycles, attempted to separate the two groups, which numbered as many as 500, as they shouted down each other during what was billed as an anti-immigration rally.

At 3:50 p.m., Los Angeles Police officials declared the rally to be an illegal assembly, as its parade permit had expired, and a short time later arrested organizer Ted Hayes, a homeless advocate-turned anti-immigration activist. Four others were arrested for refusing to disperse.

LAPD brass earlier had declared a tactical alert to muster enough officers to keep the two sides apart. And police, mindful of the May Day melee at MacArthur Park, carefully told reporters that it was setting up an observation zone at the southern side of the park.

Hayes led an unusual coalition of white Minutemen activists and a small number of blacks demanding reparations for slavery had planned an 11 a.m. march to Leimert Park, and daylong rally.

Hayes had chosen the park, an area known as the cultural center of the African American community of Los

Angeles, for a rally he called "Choose Black America - Not Amnesty - Not Illegal Immigration."

The event attracted roughly 500, though police had estimated about 300 total - about 150 for each side, LAPD spokeswoman Norma Eisenman said.

There have been no reports of violence so far, authorities said.

A citywide tactical alert was issued about 1:30 p.m., meaning officers completing their shifts are being kept on overtime in case they are needed to deal with the protest.

Meanwhile, organizers of a march demanding legalization of immigrant workers scheduled for Hollywood on Sunday said they are expecting a crowd of more than 15,000.

The march is being held in anticipation of Tuesday's Senate debate on immigration reform.

"There is a need for immigrants to be recognized for their work and our main concern is the more than 12 million workers here illegally," said Raul Murillo, executive director of the Los Angeles chapter of Hermandad Nacional.

"We want recognition for their work and legalization now. We're asking for the legalization for 12 million workers giving their lives to the United States."

Participants of the Sunday "Full Rights For Immigrants March and Rally" will begin assembling at Hollywood Boulevard and Vine Street around 10 a.m.

The march to the front of the Kodak Theatre, between Highland Avenue and Orange Drive, will begin at noon and is expected to last about an hour, Murillo said.

A plan to overhaul immigration stalled on the Senate floor earlier this month. But different from its predecessor, the latest proposal includes tougher security measures designed to gain conservative support.

The proposed bill includes a mandated $4.4 billion for border security and jail time for foreigners who overstay their visas.

The fate of the bill remains uncertain, however, as opposition builds among conservatives.
