Fla. Sheriff Wayne Ivey urges citizens to arm themselves: ‘This is war’

A Florida sheriff is calling on citizens to exercise their Second Amendment rights and arm themselves in preparation for a potential attack.
Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey, who described himself as “one of the most politically incorrect sheriffs in the country,” posted a six-minute video on Facebook last week after a disgruntled ex-employee fatally shot five people at an Orlando business.
“This is war, and you better be prepared to wage war to protect you, your family and those around you if attacked,” Sheriff Ivey said in the video. “I am firmly convinced that as Americans we can no longer sit back and pray the fight isn’t brought to us.”
The sheriff criticized London police for recently instructing citizens to “run, hide and tell” in the event of an attack.
“Terrorists and active shooters know that our citizens have been coached to run and hide and then patiently await help,” Sheriff Ivey said. “In fact, they count on it, so they can strategically target as many citizens as possible. What they don’t count on is being attacked themselves.
“The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun or a knife is an armed and well-prepared citizen or law enforcement officer,” he said. “There is no doubt that as soon as 911 is called, law enforcement is on the way. However, until they arrive, it’s up to you and those with you to neutralize or eliminate the threat.
“You have to make a decision right now, right this moment, to be prepared to save your life and those you love when the attack happens,” he said.
Sheriff Ivey then encouraged citizens to obtain their concealed carry permit, attend training, and carry a gun on them at all times, whenever possible. He suggested carrying a Taser to those uncomfortable with firearms.
His video has been shared more than 7,500 times.
Sheriff Ivey told Fox & Friends Monday morning that the feedback he’s received has been “overwhelmingly positive.”
“The video was about preparedness,” he said. “If they’re concealed carry holders, carry their gun with them. It’s not doing any good at the house or in the car.”
This isn’t Sheriff Ivey’s first video urging Americans to arm themselves. He released a very similar video in December 2015 after a terrorist attack in San Bernardino, California, left 14 people dead.
