Thread: Four Dead in School Bus Accident in Perquimans County, N.C.

North Carolina officials four people were killed Monday morning in a fiery two vehicle accident involving a school bus in Perquimans County. The children on the bus suffered only minor injuries.

Authorities say a two-cab flat-bed truck ran into the rear of the bus which was stopped to pick up students on Highway 17 between Hertford and Edenton around 7:15am. The bus, #102, was carrying 40 students to Perquimans Middle School.

Four of the five people on the truck were killed in the crash. The fifth person, the driver, was transported to a Greenville hospital and is expected to survive.

According to authorities, the truck ignited on impact, while the bus, which had run off the road into a ditch, bounced back up onto the road, where it hit the truck a second time and then caught fire.

Zita Ferebee, driver of the bus, helped students get out through an emergency exit at the back of the bus.

Four of the students and the driver of the truck were transported to Chowan Hospital by ambulance. One student was later sent to Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville for additional observation. The other 36 children and the bus driver were also taken to the hospital by bus as a precaution.

Police say Ferebee refused to leave the bus until all the children were safely rescued.

WAVY News 10 has learned the five men in the truck were from Wilson, N.C., and were on their way to a construction job in Elizabeth City.

Late Monday afternoon, officials identified those who perished in the crash:

Jose Davalos, 28 Mardronio Ceballos, 27 Javier Morales, 36 Francisco Fajardo, 22
