CDC report predicts as many as 1.4 million cases of Ebola by January

    Published September 23, 2014FoxNews.com

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released a report Tuesday predicting as many as 550,000 to 1.4 million cases of the Ebola virus in Liberia and Sierra Leone alone, by the end of January.
The CDC calculations are based, in part, on assumptions that cases have been dramatically underreported. Other projections haven't made the same kind of attempt to quantify illnesses that may have been missed in official counts.
CDC scientists conclude there may be as many as 21,000 reported and unreported cases in just those two countries as soon as the end of this month.
“The model shows — and I don’t think this has been shown by other modeling tools out there — that a surge now can break the back of the epidemic. It also shows that there are severe costs of delay," CDC Director Dr. Thomas Frieden said in a press conference Tuesday.
The agency's numbers seem "somewhat pessimistic" and do not account for infection control efforts already underway, said Dr. Richard Wenzel, a Virginia Commonwealth University scientist who formerly led the International Society for Infectious Diseases.
Separately, the World Health Organization (WHO) warned in a new report that the number of people infected with the Ebola virus could reach 20,000 by the beginning of November if efforts to contain the outbreak are not accelerated.
The outbreak has killed around 2,800 people in five West African countries this year. An estimated 5,800 people have been infected with the virus, which has no known cure. The WHO has repeatedly said that the actual number of infections and deaths is almost certainly higher than the official figures.
The report, published six months after the first cases were reported, is far more pessimistic than an earlier survey published last month, in which the WHO suggested that the number of cases could reach 20,000 by the middle of next year. According to The New York Times, the report also raises the possibility that the outbreak will cause Ebola to become endemic in West Africa.
The WHO said Monday that the Ebola outbreak was "pretty much contained" in Nigeria and Senegal. However, the death rate among infected is currently at around 70 percent in the other three countries touched by the infection: Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Guinea. Of those three, Liberia has reported the most Ebola cases, at just over 3,000.
The epidemic has overwhelmed the healthcare systems of all three countries, which rank among the world's poorest. There aren't enough hospital beds, health workers or even soap and water.
Last week, the U.S. announced it would build more than a dozen medical centers in Liberia and send 3,000 troops to help. Britain and France have also pledged to build treatment centers in Sierra Leone and Guinea and the World Bank and UNICEF have sent more than $1 million worth of supplies to the region.
"We're beginning to see some signs in the response that gives us hope this increase in cases won't happen," Christopher Dye, WHO's director of strategy and study co-author, told the Associated Press. "This is a bit like weather forecasting. We can do it a few days in advance, but looking a few weeks or months ahead is very difficult."
Other outside experts questioned the WHO's projections and said Ebola's spread would ultimately be slowed not only by containment measures but by changes in people's behavior.
"It's a big assumption that nothing will change in the current outbreak response," said Dr. Armand Sprecher, an infectious diseases specialist at Doctors Without Borders.
"Ebola outbreaks usually end when people stop touching the sick," he said. "The outbreak is not going to end tomorrow but there are things we can do to reduce the case count."
Local health officials have launched campaigns to educate people about the symptoms of Ebola and not to touch the sick or the dead. Previous Ebola outbreaks have been in other areas of Africa; this is the first to hit West Africa.
The Associated Press contributed to this report.

The DoD predicts the number of Ebola cases worldwide to be 1.4 million by the end of the year, with a 62% mortality rate. We have already seen how the United States is seen across the globe as the best treatment option for those who believe they may have been infected and that they will not hesitate to beat a path to our door.
I'm going to assume the mortality rate will increase if the illness rate increases to millions. IMO, once the system gets swamped, fewer people will be able to get the necessary care to increase their chance for survival.

SOUTHCOM Ebola Assessment & White House “Hot Mic”: “We’re Screwed”

in News, Politics / by Brandon Walker / on October 9, 2014 at 7:25 pm /

A White House correspondent got caught on a hot mic, and the Military delivered a grim report from SOUTHCOM on Ebola. One message you can not miss — “We’re Screwed.”
Ebola is in the United States. We’ve had patients in several US cities, including the one in Dallas, that potentially exposed many US Citizens. Our government is even flying patients to the US for treatment. We have a wide open southern border, while pointing guns at boy scouts on the northern border. We already know the Center For Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is screaming on one hand that multiple countries are being affected, then saying the risk in the United States is low on the other. We even know of the president sending combat troops to “fight” Ebola, technically something that is fictitious and impossible.
So how worried should we be?
To start, White House correspondent Major Garret summed it up in one simple phrase while caught on a “hot mic” or “open mic” moment on October 3, 2014. Right after a White House briefing on Ebola and a Washington DC test possibly coming up positive, he had this to say:
His statement that the associated press is trying to hide from us was, “We’re Screwed.”
Now imagine if you will, since international flights usually make stops elsewhere in the country before flying into Washington DC, how many people were on these flights?
Things get even more serious in a press release from the Department of Defense directly from General Kelly of SOUTHCOM on our border crisis — that if this thing blows, even the CDC would have a hard time trying to contain it like they say they are.
The threat of potential spread from Central and South America into the United States is real, and it could be happening right now. On October 8, the commander of the Southern Command addressed the audience of the National Defense University on what is actually happening in regards to Ebola:
“By the end of the year, there’s supposed to be 1.4 million people infected with Ebola and 62 percent of them dying, according to the [Centers for Disease Control and Prevention],” Marine Corps Gen. John F. Kelly said. “That’s horrific. And there is no way we can keep Ebola [contained] in West Africa.”
If it comes to the Western Hemisphere, many countries have little ability to deal with an outbreak of the disease, the general said.
“So, much like West Africa, it will rage for a period of time,” Kelly said. ~defense.gov
There are very real planes traveling to Central and South America. He stated quite bluntly if the disease breaks and starts infecting areas like Honduras and Guatemala at the rate it is in West Africa, it will cause mass panic and people will flee the areas in rates even worse than they are now, coming directly to the United States.
“If it breaks out, it’s literally, ‘Katie bar the door,’ and there will be mass migration into the United States,” Kelly said. “They will run away from Ebola, or if they suspect they are infected, they will try to get to the United States for treatment.” ~defense.gov
It is not only possible, it is already happening.
Kelly spoke of visiting the border of Costa Rica and Nicaragua with U.S. embassy personnel. At that time, a group of men “were waiting in line to pass into Nicaragua and then on their way north,” he recalled.
“The embassy person walked over and asked who they were and they told him they were from Liberia and they had been on the road about a week,” Kelly continued. “They met up with the network in Trinidad and now they were on their way to the United States — illegally, of course.”
Those men, he said, “could have made it to New York City and still be within the incubation period for Ebola.” ~defense.gov
This is a very real and very deadly threat straight from the Department of Defense.
It isn’t rocket science. The majority of Americans watching NBC get the potential dangers.
According to the online poll conducted Tuesday, 58 percent of Americans would support a ban on incoming flights from Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone, where there have been more than 8,000 cases of Ebola and 3,857 deaths from the virus since March. Twenty percent of respondents opposed a travel ban, the survey found, and the rest were unsure. ~Yahoo News courtesy of NBC
It is past time to secure the border and limit flights if the CDC truly wishes to contain this virus.

DEPT OF DEFENSE: ‘If Ebola Breaks Out, There Will Be Mass Migration To America’

The potential spread of Ebola into Central and Southern America is a real possibility, the commander of U.S. Southern Command told an audience at the National Defense University here yesterday.

This is a particularly possible scenario if the disease gets to Haiti or Central America, he said. If the disease gets to countries like Guatemala, Honduras or El Salvador, it will cause a panic and people will flee the region, the general said.
“If it breaks out, it’s literally, ‘Katie bar the door,’ and there will be mass migration into the United States,” Kelly said. “They will run away from Ebola, or if they suspect they are infected, they will try to get to the United States for treatment.”
Also, transnational criminal networks smuggle people and those people can be carrying Ebola, the general said.
Those men, he said, “could have made it to New York City and still be within the incubation period for Ebola.”
Kelly said his command is in close contact with U.S. Africa Command to see what works and what does not as it prepares for a possible outbreak in the area of operations.

CLOSE THE BORDER! MARINE CORPS FOUR-STAR GENERAL WARNS OF 'MASS MIGRATION' INTO THE US IF EBOLA HITS CENTRAL AMERICA

    Published: 08 October 2014.

'It's literally, "Katie bar the door'

The Marine Corps general who leads America's Southern Command warned Tuesday that the U.S. could face an unprecedented flood of immigrants from the south if the Ebola virus epidemic hits Central America.
'If it breaks out, it's literally, "Katie bar the door",' Gen John Kelly told said during a public discussion at the National Defense University. 'And there will be mass migration into the United States.'
'They will run away from Ebola, or if they suspect they are infected, they will try to get to the United States for treatment.'
The phrase 'Katie bar the door' refers to a panic in response to a coming threat. It likely originated with an 1894 poem about an Irish girl's family protecting their household from her drunkard husband.
Kelly also warned on Tuesday that if the deadly disease should reach isolated, resource-poor countries in the Western Hemisphere like Haiti, it could devastate large populations before it's brought to heel.

U.S. Marine Gen. John Kelly, commander of U.S. Southern Command, warned about the threat of Ebola coming from south of the US border

Coming to Texas? Gen. Kelly warned that an Ebola outbreak south of the border would bring a new swell of humanity to the US seeking refuge and medical treatment

Kelly, a four-star Marine Corps general (shown here in July), is concerned that the US won't be able to contain Ebola if it arrives via migrants instead of through airports

'By the end of the year, there's supposed to be 1.4 million people infected with Ebola and 62 percent of them dying, according to the CDC,' he said.
'That's horrific. And there is no way we can keep Ebola [contained] in West Africa.'
And once it makes the large-scale jump over the Atlantic Ocean, he worried aloud, 'much like West Africa, it will rage for a period of time.'
Making matters potentially worse, Kelly warned that the same human trafficking networks responsible for bringing illegal immigrants northward through Mexico could unwittingly pass Ebola to the U.S. through their human cargo.

He accompanied American embassy personnel to visit the border between Costa Rica and Nicaragua, he recalled.
They saw a group of men 'waiting in line to pass into Nicaragua and then on their way north.'
'The embassy person walked over and asked who they were,' Kelly said, 'and they told him they were from Liberia and they had been on the road about a week.'
'They met up with the network in Trinidad and now they were on their way to the United States – illegally, of course.'
Those men, he told the military audience, 'could have made it to New York City and still be within the incubation period for Ebola.'
Ebola patients can carry the disease for a week or more before symptoms show and they become capable of easily transmitting the disease to others.
The illness has killed 3,439 people in west Africa this year, according to the World Health Organization.
The first American patient, a Liberian man who developed symptoms after reaching Texas on a trip to marry his girlfriend, died Wednesday morning.

Illegal immigrant trafficking is already a booming business in Mexico despite the chance of being apprehended, and this could leave the US open to new sources of Ebola

First of many? Thomas Eric Duncan became the first US Ebola victim to perish from the disease on Wednesday morning

The Weekly Standard noted Wednesday that Gen. Kelly warned this year about the dangers associated with a loose American border to the south.
Budgets cuts, he said in a spring congressional hearing, are 'severely degrading' his Pentagon task force's ability to stem the flow of illegal immigration.
Nearly 75 per cent of traffickers, he said, are left unchallenged.
'I simply sit and watch it go by,' Kelly told lawmakers.
'All this corruption and violence is directly or indirectly due to the insatiable U.S.demand for drugs, particularly cocaine, heroin and now methamphetamines,” Kelly told the Defense One website in July, 'all of which are produced in Latin America and smuggled into the U.S. along an incredibly efficient network along which anything – hundreds of tons of drugs, people, terrorists, potentially weapons of mass destruction or children – can travel, so long as they can pay the fare.'

Border Agents Catch African Man Sneaking Into US; Discover Major Problem

By Steve Straub On October 9, 2014 · Leave a Comment · In US

This is troubling and a bit worrisome, If I had Ebola I would do everything I could to get to the USA where authorities have proven they would try and save me…

    Via TheBlaze:

U.S. Border Patrol agents say an incident along the Texas-Mexico border Wednesday night is a clear warning that they are not prepared to deal with the threat of people infected with Ebola and other communicable diseases trying to cross into the United States.

Agents in the Rio Grande Valley border sector apprehended a man from the eastern African nation of Eritrea who was trying to cross illegally into the U.S.Agents told TheBlaze it isn’t the first time they’ve apprehended someone from Africa or “special interest aliens” – persons from nations with known terrorist ties – trying to cross the border. But in this case, the potential for disease, not terrorism, was their primary concern.
There have been no reported cases of Ebola virus in Eritrea; the outbreak has been limited to the West Africa countries of Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Nigeria, with individual cases diagnosed in Spain and the United States.
But Border Patrol agents with knowledge of the man’s apprehension told TheBlaze the case illustrates a major problem: There are no real protocols in place to handle people at the border coming from nations dealing with Ebola or outbreaks of other infectious diseases.

Albert Spratte, a Border Patrol agent and union representative with the National Border Patrol Council Local 3307 in the Rio Grande Valley sector, said there is enormous concern among agents about the lack of information and education regarding the Ebola crisis.

“We just don’t have the training to respond,” Spratte told TheBlaze. “I got messages from guys who were scared because a guy from Africa had been apprehended and he was being brought into the station. These agents said that they were not being told what was going on.
Do you think the Ebola scare plus the fact that ISIS fighters are crossing into the country will force Obama to seal the border?

[Watch] General, BP Rep Warn of Ebola Border Stampede – DHS Chief Johnson Just Shrugs It Off

Posted on 9 October, 2014 by Rick Wells

Marine Corps General John Kelly called it “literally Katie bar the door in terms of mass migration into the United States.” He’s describing what would be the result of an Ebola outbreak in Central America. He adds, “These populations will move, to either run away from Ebola or, in the fear of having been infected, will get to the United States where they will be taken care of.”
As the head of America’s Southern Command, General Kelly speaks from an informed position and his opinion is worth listening to. What he is saying is also much more likely to be the truth than what is spewed by the Obama operatives, particularly the open borders crowd in the ironically named Department of Homeland Security.
Border Patrol Council #3307 Vice President Chris Cabrera speaks with Stuart Varney regarding the stamped threat and is in 100 percent agreement. Varney asks him “Has anything been done whatever on the border to secure it in the event of that kind of outbreak?
Cabrera’s response is exactly what we would expect of this regime which is working feverishly to undermine our sovereignty. He says, “You know actually nothing has.” He then details how just last night an individual was apprehended from East Africa, not from the high risk zone, but nearby and illustrative of the ease with which people are able to make the long journey and cross into our country.
He describes the quarantine area at the border as consisting of four orange cones and some yellow caution tape. Those are very rudimentary methods and just as with everything else Obama and DHS create in the name of security, an ineffective, half-measure.
Varney points out that in order for the government to get in front of this potential crisis, they would have to secure the border. Of course they aren’t willing to do that. Varney then quotes DHS Secretary Jeh Johnson laying out a plan to do nothing but allow us to be overrun and infected, in the name of good neighborliness.
Homeland Security is populated by a corrupt leadership group which works not for our security by to diminish it. The centralized control which was sold to the American people as a response to our weakness to terrorism was a vital component in the domestic enemies’ plan to weaken us and it is working to near perfection.
Cabrera estimates they are at a thirty percent apprehension rate, at current levels. In the event of a stampede, that rate drops to nothing and the agents move to a corpse removal and disposal operation.

He says the answer is to stop cutting their manpower, stop cutting their hours and get their guys back on the frontline so that they can secure the border. He left out remove their management, a most urgent need and critical to our survival.
Agent Cabrera says that his sentiments are widely shared, that the rank and file members feel vulnerable and ignored by an aloof, out of touch and unconcerned bureaucracy which is safely tucked away in Washington, DC.
Cabrera believes that it is a matter of the distance involved that has made their management detached. He’s likely being generous in characterizing their motives.
He and his fellow agents are being used as fodder, stage props for the fascists’ presentation for which the curtain is about to rise.
True Homeland Security is dependent upon a change at the top, of that agency and of our government in general.

Ebola victims without symptoms can still be contagious

German doctors show CDC wrong about spread of disease

    Published: 1 day ago

    Jerome R. Corsi

CDC Director Tom Frieden speaking to a House Foreign Affairs subcommittee on the Ebola virus

NEW YORK – A group of German medical doctors in a peer-reviewed medical journal article published by Oxford University Press have challenged a key assumption regarding the Ebola virus repeatedly asserted by Dr. Thomas Frieden, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta.
The researchers found that a patient showing no symptoms of the disease can still transmit a virus like Ebola by air if droplets containing the virus are transmitted to another person by a sneeze or cough.
As WND reported Tuesday, the World Health Organization has admitted that “wet and bigger droplets from a heavily infected individual, who has respiratory symptoms caused by other conditions or who vomits violently could transmit the Ebola virus over a short distance to another nearby person.”
WHO said it could happen when “virus-laden heavy droplets are directly propelled, by coughing or sneezing onto the mucus membranes or skin with cuts or abrasions of another person.”
Still, WHO added a qualification, insisting the transmission of Ebola by sneezing or coughing is not within its definition of airborne transmission.
News broke Wednesday morning that the first person diagnosed with Ebola in the U.S., Thomas Eric Duncan, had died in Dallas. The victim’s home neighborhood in the Liberian capital, meanwhile, remained under quarantine.
Later Wednesday, a Texas sheriff’s deputy was rushed to the hospital in Frisco, Texas, with Ebola symptoms after delivering a quarantine notice to the apartment where Duncan was staying.
WND reported Wednesday Liberia is preventing journalists from reporting Ebola-related stories from health care centers in the country unless they obtain written permission from the government. The news came as the World Health Organization issued a statement warning that the officially reported decline in new cases in Liberia over the past three weeks “is unlikely to be genuine,” because problems with data gathering continue.
What do YOU think? What is your reaction to death of Dallas Ebola victim? Sound off in today’s WND poll
    ‘Not easily detected’
The German physicians, led by Dr. Timm H. Westhoff of the Department of Nephrology at the Carité Campus Benjamin Franklin in Berlin, noted in a virology blog published Feb. 12, 2009, that acute viral infections such as Ebola hemorrhagic fever may cause little or no clinical symptoms in a so-called “inapparent infection” yet may be contagious.
“A well-known example is poliovirus: over 90% are without infections,” Westhoff and his colleagues continued. “During an inapparent infection, sufficient virus replication occurs in the host to induce antiviral antibodies, but not enough to cause disease. Such infections are important for the spread of infection, because they are not easily detected.”
Westhoff and his colleagues then made the key point that individuals with an inapparent infection, showing no symptoms, can yet spread diseases such as polio.
“During the height of the polio epidemic in the United States, the quarantine of paralyzed patients had no effect on the spread of the disease, because 99 percent of the infected individuals had no symptoms and were leading normal lives spreading infection.”
Westhoff and his colleagues also discussed the risk of spreading Ebola by sneezing or coughing.
“An example of a classic acute infection is uncomplicated influenza,” the medical doctors noted. “Virus particles are inhaled in droplets produced by sneezing or coughing, and begin replicating in ciliated columnar epithelial cells of the respiratory tract. As new infectious virions are produced, they spread to neighboring cells.”
The point was clear: “Inapparent infections probably are important features of pathogens that are well-adapted to their hosts. They replicate sufficiently to endure the spread to new hosts, but not enough to damage the host and prevent transmission.”
Westhoff and his associates conclude: “Acute viral infections are responsible for epidemics of disease involving millions of individuals each year, such as influenza and measles. When vaccines are not available, acute infections are difficult to control – most are complete by the time the patient feels ill, and the virus has already spread to another host.”
The German physicians published in 2008 the fundamental medical research that formed the basis for their blog comments, demonstrating kidney-transplant patients could carry the norovirus infection that is common in cases of acute gastroenteritis, even if the patient was asymptomatic.
Westhoff’s 2008 study provided “the first evidence” that norovirus, typically a self-limiting disease of short duration, can cause chronic infection in renal transplant recipients,” even when there are no symptoms of acute gastroenteritis evident in the patient.
Dr. Norman M. Balog, D.O., a board-certified family doctor practicing in Silver Spring, Maryland, brought the research of the German medical team to the attention of WND as evidence that the CDC’s Frieden could not prove his assertion air travel was safe as long as a person infected with Ebola were not showing symptoms. An infected person can go as long as 21 days in an incubation period before being infected.
“Dr. Freiden is either completely uninformed of this research,” Balog explained to WND in an exclusive telephone interview, “or he is deliberately lying because he does not want to panic the general public.”
Balog pointed out that asymptomatic carriers of diseases infecting others is a phenomenon that has been widely documented in virology studies for decades.
“There’s a good potential that on any given day a person you may shake hands with will have Strep Group A Streptococcus that causes sore throats,” he pointed out. “Shaking hands you take the risk you are going to get the Streptococcus virus, even if the person you shook hands with looked perfectly well.”
Balog explained to WND much of the fundamental research on Ebola, including the conditions under which asymptomatic carriers of the disease can infect others, has yet to be conducted and reported in peer-reviewed medical journals.
“Dr. Freiden and the CDC have been reassuring the American public from the beginning of the current outbreak that we can contain and control Ebola, no problem; but the first assurances were three continents ago,” he pointed out. “Now we have Ebola in the United States and in Spain. Where is Ebola going to show up next?”
Balog was critical of the steps taken so far by the CDC to contain the Ebola outbreak.
“Ebola is spreading a lot faster than anybody expected,” he said.
“But even today we are not stopping people from West Africa from boarding international air flights; health officials in Dallas did not put up a fence around Duncan’s apartment complex; and it took several days before Dallas health authorities found anyone qualified to clean up the vomit outside Duncan’s apartment. And then the workers just washed the vomit down into the town storm drains.”
Balog pointed out the medical literature on virology commonly says asymptomatic but infected individuals can spread a disease to others before showing any signs of being sick.
“We have medical models that say a person is capable of secreting a virus like Ebola in bodily fluids before the person displays symptoms of the disease,” he stressed, “and that medical evidence is simply being ignored by Dr. Frieden and the CDC when the public is told repeatedly it’s OK to let Ebola-infected people fly as long as they don’t have a fever.”

Southcom General Predicts Illegals Will Bring Ebola to U.S.

Mass migration into U.S. when disease reaches Central America

    by Kurt Nimmo | Infowars.com | October 9, 2014

The commander of the U.S. Southern Command, Marine Corps Gen. John F. Kelly, told an audience at the National Defense University illegal immigrants may bring Ebola to the United States.

“By the end of the year, there’s supposed to be 1.4 million people infected with Ebola and 62 percent of them dying, according to the [Centers for Disease Control and Prevention],” Kelley said. “That’s horrific. And there is no way we can keep Ebola [contained] in West Africa.”
He said Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador and other countries in Central America will not able to deal with the disease when it arrives in the Western Hemisphere.
“If it breaks out, it’s literally, ‘Katie bar the door,’ and there will be mass migration into the United States,” Kelly said. “They will run away from Ebola, or if they suspect they are infected, they will try to get to the United States for treatment.”

Kelley said he witnessed how easy it is for illegals to enter the United States. While visiting the border of Costa Rica and Nicaragua with U.S. embassy personnel, he saw a group of men “waiting in line to pass into Nicaragua and then on their way north.”
“The embassy person walked over and asked who they were and they told him they were from Liberia and they had been on the road about a week,” Kelly said. “They met up with the network in Trinidad and now they were on their way to the United States — illegally, of course.”
He said the men “could have made it to New York City and still be within the incubation period for Ebola.”
The United States is currently engaged in a token effort to stop the spread of the disease. On Saturday officials will take the temperatures of travelers from West Africa as they arrive at several airports, including John F. Kennedy in New York, Dulles near Washington, O’Hare in Chicago, Hartsfield-Jackson in Atlanta and Newark Liberty outside New York.
“What we’re essentially doing is adding another layer of security, and this is another layer of screening that individuals who are coming from those three countries will have to go through,” White House spokesman Josh Earnest told reporters on Wednesday, “and what that will do, is it will add some confidence in our ability to continue to protect the American people from the Ebola outbreak.” Any confidence the government claims to provide for the American people is undermined by the prospect of the disease entering the country through its southern border. Transnational criminal networks smuggling people into the country will not be conducting ineffective temperature checks.
