GOP Rep. Presses for Completion of Double Layered Fence Along Southern Border
by CAROLINE MAY
18 Jul 2016
Amid an ongoing surge in illegal immigration and concerns about the terrorist threat in the United States, Rep. Randy Weber (R-TX) says the time is now for increased staffing at border patrol stations and the completion of a double-layered border fence.
“Our nation’s southern border has been left unprotected for far too long,” Weber in a statement said Monday.
The Texas lawmaker has introduced legislation to ensure that Customs and Border Patrol stations along the U.S.-Mexico border are fully staffed and the perimeter reinforced. His bill is called the Protect our Southwestern States Enforcement (POSSE) Act.
“The POSSE Act will direct the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol to keep every border patrol station open and fully staffed to effectively halt the flow of illegal aliens, and combat the domestic criminality associated with our current lack of border security.” Weber explained.
His bill seeks to “fully staff” nine specific border stations including Texas’ Rig Bend Sector, Del Rio Sector, El Paso Sector, Laredo Sector, and Rio Grande Valley Sector as well as California’s El Centro Sector and San Diego Sector. Arizona’s Tucson Sector and Yuma Sector round out the list.
Weber’s legislation also mandates the completion of the double-layered fence along the entire southern border.
“In addition, this legislation would require the completion of effective double layer fencing along the entire southwestern border, which currently has numerous gaps that have allowed for illegal immigrants and potential terrorists to easily cross into the United States,” Weber continued. “Our nation’s security is my top priority.”
Weber announced his bill Monday, the first day of the Republican National Convention. The presumptive GOP nominee, Donald Trump, has made border security, and in particular the construction of a giant wall along the U.S.-Mexico border, a centerpiece of his presidential candidacy.
“My legislation will put Americans first by restoring common sense border security on our southern border,” Weber added.
