We have had American troops on the N/S Korean border for 60 years. I believe that America's borders are more important to Americans than Korea's. It seems that most of the objectors in these stories have latino names. That tells a story, too.

Often security is in the perception of the would be offender, image presented influences perception!

I bet Perry cancels it before it even happens.

New Mexico Has No Plans To Send National Guard Troops To Border

    July 22, 2014 6:09 AM

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — New Mexico has no plans to send National Guard troops to the international border to deal with an influx of children and families from Central America trying to enter the country illegally, Gov. Susana Martinez’s administration said Monday.

The governor has been closely monitoring the border situation but there’s no immediate plan to deploy the National Guard on a state mission to the border with Mexico, Martinez spokesman Enrique Knell said.

His comments came after Texas Gov. Rick Perry announced up to 1,000 troops would be sent to the Texas-Mexico border.

Knell said in a statement that Martinez “does believe there is a role for the National Guard in protecting our border.”

There are about two dozen National Guard troops on a federal mission to assist the Border Patrol with counter-drug operations, including surveillance, according to Capt. Brian Raphael, a spokesman for the New Mexico National Guard.

Knell said Martinez disagreed with federal decisions in 2008 and 2012 to stop funding programs that had National Guard troops supporting the Border Patrol with non-law enforcement duties to help deal with border violence.

On Saturday, Martinez toured a temporary detention facility in Artesia for several hundred immigrant women and children who are to be deported soon to Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador. The governor said a comprehensive federal immigration plan is needed to stop the surge of immigrants.

Sheriff Joe Says National Guard Cannot Stop Border Surge

POSTED BY CABRILLO ON JULY 25, 2014

Joe Arpaio, the controversial, six-term sheriff of Arizona’s largest county, said Friday that sending National Guard troops to the border is not the answer to the latest immigrant surge.

“It’s good public relations, perception, deterrent. All that’s imortant. But it’s not going to do that much,” he said in an interview with Times of San Diego.

“The National Guard really doesn’t have the authority to do the enforcement.”

Earlier this week, Texas Gov. Rick Perry announced that he wouldorder 1,000 National Guard troops to the Texas border to help stem the surge in unaccompanied minors from Central America.

The sheriff is known nationally for the “tent city” jail in Phoenix, aggressive enforcement of immigration laws and his investigation of President Obama’s birth certificate. He was in San Diego to speak at a meeting Saturday of Ramona TEA’d, a Tea Party group. He met Times of San Diego after a lunch in Old Town’s Casa Guadalajara, where he mingled with tourists from Arizona, shaking hands.

Arpaio said he believes it’s impossible to stop the immigrant surge without joint operations involving the Border Patrol, possibly the military, and the Mexican Army and Mexican Federal Police. He said he based this on his 25 years of experience as a Drug Enforcement Administration officer, including assignments in Central America. “We used to do [joint operations], but I don’t think this president wants to do it,” Arpaio said.

He took issue with the “secure the border” message heard from politicians at all levels, saying it can never be fully secured and suggested waiting for this would only delay changes to immigration laws. On that issue, he opposed amnesty but said he supports increasing visas and taking other steps to allow more lawful immigration.

One of Arpaio’s most controversial moves was to set up a citizen posse, which he is permitted to do under Arizona law, to investigate claims that President Obama’s birth certificate is fraudulent. “We’ve been working two and a half years,” he said. “I feel very confident that we have proof that it’s a fake, forged document…Little by little, I’m getting closer. I’m not giving it up.”

Arpaio, 82, said he considered a run for governor, but has deciced to seek a seventh term as sheriff. In January he will be the longest-serving elected sheriff of Maricopa county.

Will AZ follow TX and call National Guard to border? Not likely.

    (CBS 5 News)

PHOENIX (CBS5) -Texas Gov. Rick Perry announced on Monday that he's counting on the Texas National Guard to secure the state's border with Mexico after thousands of illegal immigrants were caught crossing the 1,254-mile boundary, including many unaccompanied children.

"American's lives are at stake here," Perry said. "This is about the security of this country."

An official with the Arizona National Guard said troops are ready for any mission Gov. Jan Brewer has for them, whether it's humanitarian or assistance along the Arizona-Mexico border.

However, a spokesman at Brewer's office said calling the Guard is currently not an option. Brewer has already faced several legal battles over jurisdiction in border conflicts and the state is struggling to balance its checkbook.

"There are currently no plans to activate the National Guard," the spokesman said. "Our emergency funds would be depleted in two weeks."

Texas is set to spend $12 million every month while the National Guard is active under Perry's direction.

Brewer's office said that is not a bill the state can afford. State Rep. John Kavanagh chairs the Joint Legislative Budget Committee.

"The way it looks right now, we're going to be facing about a $400-million shortfall this coming year," Kavanagh said. "It's close to $1 billion the next year."

Kavanagh said if the federal government strips the state of Border Patrol agents, the game might change.

"If we lose Border Patrol agents, the question is not can we afford (mobilizing National Guard) but can we afford not to?" Kavanagh says, "At this point, I don't believe we need to mobilize the National Guard to the Arizona border."

Arizona leadership continues to lobby the Obama Administration for assistance securing the borderlands. In the past, the federal government has answered those requests.

In 2006, President Bush sent 6,000 National Guard Troops to the southern border at the requests of Arizona, California, New Mexico and Texas.

In 2010, President Obama extended that aid to help support the Border Patrol.
