Grenades, machine guns recovered in Elgin; Addison man charged

Machine guns and hand grenades were recovered last week from an Elgin storage unit rented by an Addison man.



Elgin police assisted members of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's Homeland Security investigations arm in executing a search warrant about 9 p.m. Friday at a storage unit at 665 Big Timber Road, a news release stated.

The Kane County sheriff's bomb squad was summoned to secure the grenades. The renter of the storage unit, 31-year-old Juan Mexicano of Addison, later was charged with five counts of possession of weapons/machine guns. Mexicano appeared in Kane County bond court Tuesday morning where his bail was set at $1 million.

Elgin police Cmdr. Colin Fleury said the search warrant was part of a larger investigation that led to the storage unit, declining to give more details about the investigation.

"We don't know what his purpose was, or what he planned to use these weapons," he said. "We are still trying to figure that out."

Several departments in the task force assisted, including those of Addison, Chicago, Hoffman Estates, New Lenox, Olympia Fields, Streamwood, Lombard, DuPage County and Will County.

"The investigative effort and teamwork displayed in this case is another example of the great partnerships we strive to build with our local and federal agencies," said Lt. Adam Schuessler, of Elgin's special investigations division. "The amount of work invested by all involved culminated in extremely dangerous weapons being seized and prevented their possible use in our communities."

Mexicano's next court date is set for Aug. 31 at the Kane County Judicial Center.
According to Kane County court documents, the guns recovered included a Colt AR-15 SP1 model .223 caliber rifle, two unknown model .233 caliber rifles, an MP28 Schmeisser, and a .45 caliber Thompson submachine gun.

Is he an illegal alien? Is that why ICE was involved? The article doesn't mention any immigration detainer by ICE.

Usually have to wait until they make a court appearance to find out if there is an I.C.E. detainer.

An Illinois man is facing numerous weapons charges after agents from ICE and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) searched his storage unit and found live grenades and some unregistered Title II firearms, among others.

The individual, Juan Mexicano, 31, of Addison, Illinois, was the subject of an ongoing investigation by federal agents who obtained a warrant to search his storage facility last Friday.

Assisted by Elgin Police and other local agencies, numerous firearms were recovered including a host of AR-15 variants including some early Colt SP-1s. Images released by EPD show several submachine guns including what appear to be a Schmeisser MP-28/II, a Soviet PPsh, and a Thompson M1A1.

Other NFA goodies are sprinkled throughout.



The Kane County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad was called to neutralize the live grenades.

As noted in a release from ICE, Mexicano has been charged in a Kane County Bond court with five counts of possessing weapons (machine guns), a Class 2 Felony, with bail set at $1 million. Court documents state the Thompson, Schmeisser and three of the ARs are capable of select or full-auto fire.
