Some members of the Manassas-based Virginia National Guard are among those returning to the state after serving along the southwest border with Mexico since July.

More than 400 soldiers and airmen from the Virginia Guard - including 18 from the 266th Military Police Company in Manassas - will be welcomed home in a ceremony at the Fort Pickett Theater on Friday morning before being released to their home units.

The Virginia National Guard was among 2,500 troops who volunteered to participate in Operation Jump Start, President Bush's initiative to increase the number of guardsmen contributing to U.S. border security. Under the president's plan, the Guard provided mobile communications, transportation, logistics, training and construction support to the U.S. Border Patrol.

They supported the U.S. Customs and Border Protection in Sasabe, Nogales, and Ajo, Ariz., where they maintained Entry Identification Team sites along the border, said Lt. Col. Chester Carter, spokesman for the Virginia National Guard

"These Virginia National Guard soldiers and airmen were responsible for reporting over 1,800 undocumented alien entries across the U.S.-Mexico border to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection," Carter said. "Their vigilance also resulted in the seizure of over 900 pounds of marijuana by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

This is all great, but my question is - which NG unites replaced them on the border?
