Oscar Sanchez-Maldonado was sentenced to two years of probation for running a prostitution house in Trenton - Mercer County Prosecutor's Office
TRENTON – Although a Superior Court judge sentenced a Guatemalan national to two years of probation for running a brothel in the city, it is unlikely that the man will be released from prison because the federal government is seeking to deport him.
Oscar Sanchez-Maldonado, who admits he is living in the country illegally from Guatemala, was arrested and charged with promoting prostitution at a home on the 1000 block of South Clinton Avenue in July. Sanchez-Maldonado, 40, pleaded guilty to the third-degree charge when he entered into a plea agreement with the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office.
At his sentencing yesterday morning, Judge Gerald Council told Sanchez-Maldonado through a Spanish-language interpreter if the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement is unsuccessful in deporting him, he is to report to probation immediately upon his release.
“I have no authority on immigration matters,” Council said.
Sanchez-Maldonado has been in prison since he was arrested on July 6 in a raid of four houses that official believed to be used as brothels. The two-year investigation — conducted by the city police, state police and the FBI — led to the arrests of 12 people who were believed to have either run or participated in prostitution at four locations in the city.
Police believe Sanchez-Maldonadowas running the brothel where police also arrested two Queens women who were charged with soliciting in and engaging in prostitution.
The case against Perla Nunez, who was arrested in the same raid as Sanchez-Maldonado, is still pending. She is charged with running a brothel on the 200 block of Bayard Street. She was also charged with endangering the welfare of a child, as children were known to be within arm’s reach of powdered cocaine that was packaged and ready for distribution in the home, prosecutors said previously.
