SAN FRANCISCO -- The Bureau of Land Management confirmed Wednesday that one of its ranger's service guns was stolen from a car four days before it was used to shoot and kill Kathryn Steinle on a San Francisco pier in a case that has gripped the country.

The BLM-issued handgun was stolen from the agent's car June 27 while the ranger was in San Francisco on official government travel, said Dana Wilson, a spokeswoman for the federal agency that administers about 284,000 acres of public land in the local region.

"The theft was immediately reported to the San Francisco Police Department," she said.

San Francisco law enforcement sources on Tuesday confirmed that the gun used by Juan Francisco Lopez-Sanchez, a felon and five-time deportee, belonged to a federal agent, but they
    did not specify which agency.

Wilson said BLM agents all carry service weapons.

"They are fully armed, fully fledged law enforcement officers," Wilson said of BLM agents. "Their jurisdiction is BLM land, but they often respond to other types of crime."

The BLM employs about 200 uniformed rangers and 70 special agents that investigate crimes, all enforcing "laws and regulations in the prevention, detection, and investigation of crimes affecting public lands resources," according to the bureau's website.

"The Bureau of Land Management is deeply saddened by the tragic events of July 1, 2015, and our thoughts are with the family and friends of Ms. Steinle," Wilson said.On Tuesday, in his first court appearance, Lopez-Sanchez pleaded not guilty.

He is in custody on $5 million bail and accused of fatally shooting 32-year-old Steinle on July 1 while the former Pleasanton resident walked arm in arm with her father.

JohnDoe2, thanks for all the follow-up info on this S.F. shooting. I am still not comfortable (no fault of yours) with the info released or is it fabricated? Why would a fed officer, knowing he was in a sanctuary city leave his car and leave his gun in it? I doubt as a fed officer he would be in trouble walking into the city armed. the perp being who he is can have an accident in the shower anytime, very doubtful anyone is going to make objections or claim the remains. If the fed did not lock his car, just admit a mistake or lapse of common sense.

Maybe he was out to dinner with his wife and kids in a nice restaurant, not in uniform and didn't have a need to be armed.

I have searched and have not been able to find one single article that says he left the car unlocked.

The Bureau of Land Management released a statement today saying that the gun involved in the shooting of Kate Steinle was government property and belonged to one of their enforcement rangers who was on "official government travel."

"The firearm in question was issued to a Bureau of Land Management Law Enforcement Ranger," the statement reads, indicating that it was a government-issued weapon.

According to the statement, the agent's car was "broken into and the theft occurred."

A BLM official told ABC News that the theft took place on June 27 in San Francisco and the firearm was secured in the vehicle at the time it was stolen.

The statement indicated that the theft was immediately reported to the San Francisco police."

The gun that was used in the fatal shooting of a young woman on a San Francisco pier had been stolen from a federal agent's car, officials said.

Immigration Debate Rages On After San Francisco Pier Shooting

According to the statement, the agent's car was "broken into and the theft occurred."

A BLM official told ABC News that the theft took place on June 27 in San Francisco and the firearm was secured in the vehicle at the time it was stolen.

The statement indicated that the theft was immediately reported to the San Francisco police.

Francisco Sanchez was charged with murder in connection with the July 1 killing, which sparked a debate about immigration because he had been deported several times.

Sanchez told ABC affiliate KGO-TV that he was responsible for the shooting during a jailhouse interview but has since said that it was an accident.

PHOTO: This undated photo released by the San Francisco Police Department shows Francisco Sanchez.

He told the station that he took sleeping pills and started wandering around the pier where Steinle was walking. At some point he picked up a gun and it went off, he told the station.

There has been no suggestion that Sanchez was involved in the theft.

At his arraignment Tuesday, public defender Matt Gonzalez said it is "very likely that this was an accidental shooting."

Sanchez, 45, pleaded not guilty to murder and was held on $5 million bail, according to court records.

Sanchez has five previous convictions for re-entry after deportation, according to court records. He was on probation in Texas at the time of the shooting and served federal time for sneaking back into the country.

Pier 14 Shooting: San Francisco police confirm weapon recovered in Bay near Pier 14 is same used in homicide

By Vince Cestone, KRON Published: July 10, 2015, 3:36 pm Updated: July 10, 2015, 6:19 pm

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON, BCN) — San Francisco police Friday have confirmed the gun recovered from San Francisco Bay near Pier 14 is the same gun used in the homicide of Kate Steinle.

Police used a ballistic comparison to confirm that the bullet that hit Steinle was from the gun recovered from the Bay last Thursday.

RELATED: ICE responds to San Francisco Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi’s finger-pointing over Pier 14 fatal shooting

Sources first told KRON 4 the Sig Sauer pistol was recovered by a police dive team in the bay last Thursday. The source described the weapon as being an expensive, high-end, common police gun.

Forty-five-year-old Francisco Sanchez, an undocumented immigrant, has pleaded not guilty to Steinle’s murder. He has been booked into San Francisco County Jail for homicide.

RELATED: Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi addresses criticism over previous release of alleged Pier 14 shooter

KRON 4 had also learned Tuesday that the gun used to kill a 32-year-old woman on San Francisco’s Pier 14 belonged to a federal agent, a law enforcement official briefed on the matter told Associated Press on Tuesday.

The gun was issued to a Bureau of Land Management law enforcement ranger “was on official government travel when his vehicle was broken into and the theft occurred,” according to Dana Wilson, spokeswoman for the Bureau of Land Management.

She said the ranger immediately reported the theft to the San Francisco Police Department.

San Francisco police are continuing to investigate who broke into the ranger’s vehicle and how Lopez-Sanchez might have acquired the firearm.

Lopez-Sanchez’s release from the San Francisco Sheriff’s Department’s custody, despite a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement detainer in April, has spurred national debate on immigration laws and the role local authorities should play in enforcing such laws.

San Francisco Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi’s decision to allow the undocumented immigrant with a history of convicted felonies loose on the city’s streets has come under scrutiny and it remains unclear how many other undocumented immigrants with felonies, either violent or non-violent, have been released into the city.

While San Francisco has a “sanctuary city” policy that prohibits law enforcement officials from detaining an individual on the basis of an immigration detainer when they would otherwise be eligible for release from custody, Mirkarimi has not honored any ICE detainer requests so far this year.

    Mirkarimi defended his actions F
riday, saying federal authorities seeking Lopez-Sanchez’s deportation should have obtained a court order, so as not to violate the U.S. Constitution’s Fourth Amendment.
