Guns in Murder of Mexican Lawyer Traced Back to Operation Fast & Furious

After a thorough investigation, Mexican officials have determined that the firearms used in the 2010 killing of lawyer, were connected to U.S. Operation Fast and Furious.

On October 21, 2010, drug cartel members kidnapped lawyer, Mario Gonzalez Rodriguez from his office. Patricia Gonzalez Rodriguez, sister of the victim, was attorney general of the state of Chihuahua at the time of the kidnapping.

Days after the kidnapping a video went viral on the Internet, in which Rodriguez sat handcuffed, and was surrounded by heavily armed men. Mario Gonzalez alleged that his sister had ordered killings at “the behest of the Juarez cartel” according to reports.

After a thorough investigation, Mexican officials have determined that the firearms used in the 2010 killing of lawyer, were connected to U.S. Operation Fast and Furious.

On October 21, 2010, drug cartel members kidnapped lawyer, Mario Gonzalez Rodriguez from his office. Patricia Gonzalez Rodriguez, sister of the victim, was attorney general of the state of Chihuahua at the time of the kidnapping.

Days after the kidnapping a video went viral on the Internet, in which Rodriguez sat handcuffed, and was surrounded by heavily armed men. Mario Gonzalez alleged that his sister had ordered killings at “the behest of the Juarez cartel” according to reports.

His sister denied the claims and fled to Mexico City for her safety as well as to further investigate her brother’s kidnapping and eventual murder, he was later found in a shallow grave in Chihuahua city.

Mexican federal authorities then seized 16 weapons connected with the murder soon afterwards during a shootout with drug cartel suspects. After entering information about the weapon in the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) e-trace system, two of the weapons were found to belonged to the Fast and Furious operation.

ATF traced suspected weapons, and reported the findings to Mexican officials eight months after the tracing.

Carlos Canino, the ATF’s acting U.S. attaché in Mexico was the person to finally notify the Mexican authorities.

So far, weapons traced back to Fast and Furious have been recovered in eight Mexican states, many of which included the territory of the Sinaloa drug cartel led by Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman.
