HONOLULU —Thousands of undocumented immigrants in Hawaii will now be able to get a driver's license.

On Tuesday, Governor Ige signed into law a measure that creates a new category of driver's license – it's called a limited purpose license. It enables everyone to get a license and drive legally in the state regardless of their ability to provide proof of legal status.

According to the Public Policy Director of Hawaii Appleseed, there’s an estimate of 30,000 undocumented people in Hawaii.

“It’s an opportunity for them to become a part of our community and not worry when they are trying to make ends meet, take care of their family, take their kids to school, that they can live without fear in facing a legal consequence for driving without a license,” said Jenny Lee.

Many who pushed for this law say it also means more people who drive legally in our state will now have insurance.

While undocumented immigrants are the biggest population helped by this law, advocates say many will benefit from this law including domestic violence survivors and victims of natural disasters.
